He is the chair of the mentoring committee at 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, a nonprofit that caters to the disadvantaged and underrepresented in the area.
TEMECULA, CA, May 09, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Brent Burton has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As a child, Mr. Burton enjoyed seeing the fire trucks racing down the street. Although he was originally interested in becoming a police officer, he continuously found himself drawn to the world of firefighting. After joining the LAPD's youth programs, through which he participated in several activities at the training academy, he was inspired to pursue a career in firefighting by his cousin, a member of the LA Fire Department.
During the early stages of his career, Mr. Burton gained valuable expertise as the Los Angeles County Fire Department fire captain and president of the LA County Stentorians. He also served as the president of the African American Firefighter Museum's board of directors for many years. After co-founding the museum in 1997, he played vital roles in its success by serving as the vice president and president at different times. Tragedy struck in 2014 when the museum's historian passed away. Mr. Burton stepped up to take on the role of the museum's historian and has endeavored to preserve its rich history ever since.
A seasoned firefighter with decades of experience in leadership positions, Mr. Burton excels as a consultant with the eponymous CaptainBurton.com, through which he is a consulting specialist for potential firefighter candidates. Similarly, he mentors single mothers raising young men. In addition to his consulting work, he is the chair of the mentoring committee at 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, a nonprofit that caters to the disadvantaged and underrepresented in the area. Mr. Burton also leverages his considerable expertise as board chair of the Los Angeles CARES Mentoring Movement, director of the Junior FF Youth Foundation, and with the Carl Holmes Executive Development Institute, Inc.
An expert in his field, Mr. Burton studied fire science technology at El Camino College and business management at West Los Angeles College before earning a certificate of completion from Dillard University's Executive Development Institute. Subsequently, he received an Associate of Arts in general studies and a bachelor's degree in organizational leadership from Columbia Southern University. Similarly, Mr. Burton completed paramedic, search and rescue, teaching, and safety certifications through the Los Angeles County Office of Education, the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, FEMA, The African American Board Leadership Institute, the Center for Nonprofit Management, and Safe Kids Worldwide.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Mr. Burton aligns himself with several organizations, including the Carlsbad-Laguna-Temecula alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and the Los Angeles County Fire Department. In addition to his work, he contributes to his community through 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, the California State Firefighters Association, the California Professional Firefighters Association, the International Society of Fire Service Instructors, and the Southern Poverty Law Center, to name a few.
Given his professional achievements, Mr. Burton has been honored many times, earning the Community Protector Award from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, a Special Merit Award from the Southwest region IABPFF, the National Forum for Black Public Administrators President's Award, and the Community Safety Award from the L.A. Metropolitan Association for the Education of Young Children. More recently, he received a Making a Difference Award from St. Mark AME Church and a Man of Valor Award from the Los Angeles NAACP Youth Council. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in serving as the Los Angeles County Black Firefighter Association's president.
Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, Mr. Burton credits his success to his mentors, role models, and the fire service for providing him with various ways to engage with the community. Additionally, he cites his family as a significant source of motivation and inspiration, particularly his three children, who are now thriving in their respective fields. Looking ahead, Mr. Burton intends to continue promoting inclusion within the fire department and seek out someone to take over for him with the African American Firefighter Museum.
