She conducted basic research at the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. between 1977 and 1990, during which time she became involved in conducting a national survey on the prevalence of HIV in injection drug users in the U.S. This experience led to her appointment as the director of the National Serology Reference Laboratory in Australia upon her return in 1990. Dr. Dax's success is supported by her extensive education. After earning a medical degree (MB, BS University of Melbourne, 1971) she earned a Ph.D. in neuroendocrinology and a doctorate in medicine (MD, University of Melbourne, 1989). She trained in clinical endocrinology at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore. Dr. Dax has served as the president of the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine, Vice President of the AIDS Society Asia and Pacific as well as the director of a WHO Collaborating Center on HIV/AIDS. Today, Dr. Dax utilizes her expertise and training in her role as company director.
