Mr. McGee is an educator, entrepreneur, and an innovator in the field of safety education and training as well as human resource development (HRD). He is most proud of his work creating a master's degree program for HRD at Clemson University in 2002. It was Clemson's first online program, launched with only 20 students, but was ranked number two in programs of its kind in the country within two years and has graduated over 135 students. He was also one of the first professionals to incorporate computers and the internet for safety education and training, and developed a productivity model for system assessment, evaluation and deployment. His success is the culmination of a lifelong desire to teach people in a different way, and to create training systems with predictable outcomes.
Born in West Palm Beach, Florida, Mr. McGee is the son of Clarence Phillip and Margaret Harvey McGee. He attended Wofford College to earn a BA in 1971, and worked as an eighth grade earth science teacher at Pacolet Middle School afterwards. Mr. McGee earned a master's degree in education from the University of Miami in 1973 and provided diagnostic services as an education consultant while teaching at the University of South Carolina. He worked with teachers to diagnose learning-disabled and culturally deprived students.
In 1975, Mr. McGee became an educational coordinator for the arts in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and in 1976, he worked with Indiana University producing educational television programs for continuing teachers. In 1978, Mr. McGee earned an EdD from Indiana University and an MS one year later. He went on to design training programs for administrators and developed both management and leadership programs for continuing education.
In 1983, Mr. McGee founded Instructional Designs, Inc., as a training firm. The firm produced one of the first computer-based safety programs for free use on www.free-training.com, which was designed to be compatible with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards. Mr. McGee introduced web-based learning to Webster University as an adjunct professor in 1994. In 1988, he brought his expertise to the Doctor of Business Administration program at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and served as regional director until 2000, when he joined Clemson University.
Following two years of dedicated service at the institution, the Commission on Higher Education recommended Clemson University dissolve many of its vocational and education programs, including the master's program for HRD. Shortly following that decision, Mr. McGee and his team were asked in 2003 to design an online version of the MHRD program for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. What emerged was Clemson's first and hugely successful online master's program, and in 2007, Mr. McGee was appointed the program coordinator for MHRD at Clemson University, a position he still holds to this day. In 2010, he became president of Academic Tartans Inc.
Mr. McGee has also founded the Phi Delta Kappa chapter in Spartanburg, and served as a judge for the International Quality and Productivity Center's Cubic Award, a board member for the Carolina Society of Training and Development, and worked with the Greenville, South Carolina chapter of the National Management Association. He is professionally affiliated with the American Society for Training and Development, the Academy of Human Resource Development, and the International Society of Performance Improvement.
Beyond his impressive career endeavors, Mr. McGee is charitably associated with the Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem, the Belmont Abby in North Carolina, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, and the School of Ministry in the Upper Diocese of South Carolina. He also serves as president of the Clan Mackay Society, and sang professionally for the Florida Grand Opera in Miami.
In honor of his services to human resource development, Mr. McGee was awarded the 2003 to 2005 Strom Thurmond Institute Grant from Clemson University as well as the 2002 Vice Provost's Office Grant. He was selected for inclusion in six volumes of Who's Who in America from 2011 to 2016. Mr. McGee enjoys cooking, music, and travel.
