Eli A. Friedman, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Friedman with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Leading an impressive career as a nephrologist for six decades, Dr. Friedman first earned an MD in 1957 at State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center. Interning and completing a fellowship in nephrology, Dr. Friedmen then served as a senior medical resident at Harvard Medical School's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital until 1961. He followed his residency with a a short term as an epidemic intelligence officer for the U.S. Public Health Service's Communicable Disease Center before returning to his alma mater. Now a distinguished professor of medicine at the Downstate Medical Center since 1992, Dr. Friedman previously served as a deputy chair of the department of medicine, chair of the institutional review board, and as chief of the division of nephrology in the university's department of medicine until 2009.

The inventor of the "Suitcase Kidney" in 1976, a portable dialysis machine scaled to fit a metal attach case that permits dialysis patients to be mobile while performing home dialysis and, thus, enhancing patients' quality of life, Dr. Friedman later focused his research on kidney failure, beginning in the 1990s. He has also performed clinical studies in the course of diabetes and high blood pressure and his work has been recognized by the American College of Physicians.

Licensed by the American College of Physicians of New York and Massachusetts, certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and Nephrology and the National Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. Friedman is also a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom. Active as a member of dozens of other organizations, such as the American Society of Immunology, the American Federation of Clinical Research, the American Association Immunologists, the American Association of Physicians, and the National Institute of Diabetes, he has also served as president of the International Society for Geriatric Nephrology and Urology and on the standards advisory committee of Medicaid of New York. He has authored over 500 peer reviewed papers in various journals in his area of study, edited several texts, and authored several as well, including "Acute Renal Failure" and "Diabetic Renal-Retinal Syndrome 4: Management Strategy."

Dr. Friedman was the recipient of two honorary degrees from both the University of Madras in 1985 and Long Island University in 1991. He has been awarded with countless awards over the course of his career, including a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Annual Dialysis Conference in 2014, a Sportsball Leadership Award by the Arthur Ashe Institute in 2013, and a Gibbs Award by the New York Academy Center in 2010. He has also received several grants and ongoing honors in publications like New York Super Doctors, Best Doctors in America, and America's Top Doctors. He has also been highlighted in more than 50 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.

Dr. Friedman has taught courses at Emory University in Atlanta, in addition to lectures at Canisius College. He was a visiting professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He has also done consulting work in his field of expertise for VA Hospitals since 1968. Married for 40 years before his wife's passing in 1997, Dr. Friedman has three daughters.
