California Octogenarian Champions Food Waste Reduction in New Book

Octogenarian and Culinarian, Jean B. MacLeod, is empowering households in America and globally to reduce food wastage through her newly launched book, The Waste-Wise Kitchen Companion.

TORRANCE, CA, December 06, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A 2014 EPA study revealed that Americans discard 38 million tons of food annually - a figure that translates into a staggering loss of approximately $165 billion per year. This enormous amount of food waste prompted the USDA to launch a food waste challenge in 2013 to reduce, recover and recycle food. But it's not just the economic impact. The fact is that wasted food ends up in the landfill and the breakdown releases methane gas- a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

The Waste-Wise Kitchen Companion book is a timely, easy to use food-conservation handbook designed to help individuals reduce food wastage. The book is filled with hundreds of simple, valuable tips for repurposing leftovers, extending food shelf life and repairing recipes gone wrong. The author also goes beyond the pantry to include brilliant ideas for reusing leftover non-food items like the vinegar that was previously used for descaling the kettle or coffee pot and the baking soda used for deodorizing the refrigerator.

Having lived through more than a decade of food rationing that accompanied and continued after World War II, the 85-year-old MacLeod knows a thing or two about frugality and the preciousness of food. Questioned about the motivation for writing the book, the self-proclaimed thrifty cook explained: "I love food but I hate waste. I wanted to share my knowledge of sustainable living to help households reduce wastage which will hopefully stem the food waste crisis we are now facing."

The Waste-Wise Kitchen Companion is an excellent resource not only for those who want to reduce food wastage but also for those who want to reduce their food budget. The book is available in Kindle and paperback format and can be purchased on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and independent bookstores. For further details, visit: https://jeanbmacleod.com.
