Katherine Renhe Tsiang Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Asian Art Studies

Dr. Tsiang is a prolific author and researcher with an extensive publishing history



Dr. Tsiang has been the Associate Director of the Center for the Art of East Asia at the University of Chicago since 2003.

    CHICAGO, IL, January 09, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Katherine Renhe Tsiang has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With 40 years of experience in the field, Dr. Tsiang has been the Associate Director of the Center for the Art of East Asia at the University of Chicago since 2003, helping to establish and administer the Center headed by Prof. Wu Hung. Prior to that, she was Supervisor of Research Materials in East Asian Art from 1996-2003. Her work is dedicated to studying, elucidating, and helping to preserve the history of the art East Asia and of China in particular. Her research interests include Chinese Buddhist art, Chinese ceramics and material culture, and the role of art in expressing and shaping cultural traditions in China from centuries ago up to the present day. She also helps to coordinate scholarship and fellowship programs, and organize conferences and publications and has implemented the use of innovative technology to carry out a research projects and display their results.

Guided by her academic parents to have a love of learning, Dr. Tsiang began her career by obtaining a BA in Asian Studies in 1971 and working at the National Palace Museum Taipei after graduation as a curatorial assistant, translator, and editor of the Newsletter. She went on to earn a Master of Chinese Art and Archaeology from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. She joined Indiana University at Indianapolis Herron School of Art as a lecturer on the art history of India, China, and Japan from 1978-1982, later earning a PhD from the University of Chicago in 1996.

Dr. Tsiang has been integral in expanding the scope and technology by which Asian art is taught and appreciated in modern times. She has curated exhibitions that include digital installations and interactive viewing. She has curated exhibitions of art and written and edited several books and catalogues, including recent works, "A Companion to Chinese Art," published in 2015, and 2012's "Looking at Asian Art," coedited with Prof. Martin Powers. One project she has had the opportunity to initiate involved 3D scanning of ancient Buddhist sculptures in museums around the world and the damaged Buddhist caves sites in northern China from which they were taken in order to recreate their former appearance. Through her partnerships with other scholars in the field and membership in the College Art Association, the Association for Asian Studies, the Early Medieval China Group, the T'ang Studies Society, and the Asian Art Council of the Art Institute of Chicago, she continues encouraging education and scholarly discourse regarding those subjects that interest her most. Looking ahead to the future, she sees herself working abroad at research institutes after retirement.
