An expert on Chinese foreign policy, United States - China relations, and East Asian security, Dr. Pollack has most recently been known for his work at the Brookings Institution. A former director in the John L. Thornton China Center from 2012 to 2014, where he currently serves as a senior fellow, he is also a senior fellow in the Center for East Asia Policy. Prior to joining Brookings in 2010, Dr. Pollack was professor of Asian and Pacific Studies and chairman of the strategic research department at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, RI. He formerly worked for the Rand Corporation in Santa Monica, CA, from 1978 to 2000, where he served in various senior research and management positions, including chairman of the political science department, corporate research manager for international policy, and senior advisor for international policy. He also taught at Brandeis University, the Rand Graduate School of Policy Studies, and University of California at Los Angeles.

A member of the National Committee on United States - China Relations, the Committee of International Security and Arms Control, the National Academy of Science, the International Institute of Strategic Studies, and the Council of Foreign Relations, some of Dr. Pollack's primary research interests have included Chinese national security strategy, United States - China relations, U.S. strategy in Asia and the Pacific, Korean politics and foreign policy, Asian international politics, and nuclear weapons and international security. His research has resulted in his authoring and editing of more than 24 books and research monographs and contributions in numerous edited volumes and leading professional journals not only in the United States, but also in Asia and Europe. Topics have included China's international strategies, the political and security dynamics of the Korean Peninsula, East Asian international politics and U.S. foreign, and defense policies in Asia and the Pacific. Notably, in 2009, he received a grant for research and book writing through the MacArthur Foundation.

From 2006 to 2008, Dr. Pollack served as a board member for the University of Rhode Island Hillel Foundation. He also served on numerous editorial boards throughout his career, including the Journal of Contemporary China, the Korean Journal of Defense Analysis, and Asian Affairs: An American Review.

Dr. Pollack completed a BA in Political Science at Rutgers College in 1969, a Master's degree at the University of Michigan in 1971, and a PhD at the University of Michigan in 1976. He was also a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University from 1975 to 1978. Married to Barbara Marom-Pollack with three children since 1989, Dr. Pollack loves to read and travel in his down time.
