Dr. Kang, a plant geneticist, has been affiliated with Kansas State University as an adjunct professor in the department of plant pathology since 2012. He previously served, from 2007 to 2011, as vice chancellor (CEO) of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) at Ludhiana, his alma mater and from 1986 to 2007 as a professor of quantitative genetics in the School of Plant, Environmental, and Soil Sciences at Louisiana State University. From 1981 to 1986, he was an assistant professor and sugarcane geneticist in the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. He also gained experience in crop breeding as a research station manager and senior plant breeder for Cargill, Inc., early in his career.

Widely recognized and respected for his research in quantitative genetics, Dr. Kang has contributed greatly to crop improvement efforts across years. One of his greatest achievements was developing resistance to Aspergillus flavus and the carcinogen aflatoxin in maize grain. In recognition of these advancements, he was named a fellow of the American Society of Agronomy (ASA) and the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA), as well as an honorary fellow of the Indian Society of Life Sciences, the Crop Improvement Society of India, and the Punjab Academy of Sciences. He served ASA and CSSA as chairperson of the membership committee and in other capacities. He has also been affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Genetic Association, the American Society of Sugar Cane Technologists, the International Society for Plant Molecular Biology, and the American Association of University Professors.

Dr. Kang's extensive list of honors and accolades includes the Bishan Singh Samundri Lectureship Award from Guru Nanak Dev University, the Amity Academic Excellence Award from Amity University, the Outstanding Agricultural Scientist Award from the Association of Agricultural Scientists of Indian Origin, and Distinguished Lecturer from Sigma Xi, Scientific Research Society. He was selected as Senior Fulbright Scholar to Malaysia in 1999. He has served as an editorial board member of several international journals, including Agronomy Journal (associate editor, 2001-2006), Crop Science (associate editor, 2001-2006; technical editor, 2007-2012 and 2016-onwards), and Journal of Crop Improvement (editor-in-chief, 2007-onwards). Dr. Kang has also been a contributor to numerous publications, including "Punjab Agriculture: The Challenges Ahead," "Combating Climate Change: An Agricultural Perspective," "Agricultural and Environmental Sustainability: Considerations for the Future," "Crop Improvement: Challenges in the Twenty-First Century," and "Breeding Major Food Staples." He is co-author of "GGE biplot analysis: A graphical tool for breeders, geneticists, and agronomists," the first and only textbook on this subject.

The recipient of a B.Sc. in Agriculture from Punjab Agricultural University, an MS in plant genetics from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, a MA in Botany from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, and a PhD from the University of Missouri, Dr. Kang has influenced countless undergraduate and graduate students to join the field. He has also lectured extensively in the United States and abroad, speaking on crop improvement via quantitative genetics in the Philippines, Nigeria, Malaysia, and South Africa.
