San Francisco dentist, Dr. Ben Amini, Advising Expecting Mothers on Their Oral Health

"I encourage pregnant women to follow the recommendations of their obstetricians and the American Dental Association. In most cases, pregnant women can safely seek dental care during pregnancy"

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, February 07, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is an infection that occurs when oral bacteria attack the tissues that surround and support the teeth. In the earliest stage, which is called gingivitis, gum tissue becomes red, swollen and tender. It will often bleed when teeth are brushed or flossed. As it progresses, bone tissue can be lost, the connective tissues can become loose, and teeth may be lost. Gum disease can affect anyone, but pregnant women are at an increased risk. San Francisco dentist, Dr. Ben Amini, warns expectant mothers of the risks of periodontal disease.

During pregnancy, estrogen and progesterone levels increase dramatically. Gum tissue can become more sensitive to oral bacteria as a result. About 75 percent of pregnant women suffer from pregnancy gingivitis, and for half of them, the condition will worsen over the course of their pregnancy. Unfortunately, the inflammatory nature of gum disease can lead to problems for both the woman and her pregnancy. Pregnant women with periodontal disease are at a higher risk of several complications, including preterm birth and having a baby with a low birthweight, according to "Dental News."

While not technically a birth defect, a low birth weight, or a birth weight of fewer than 5.5 pounds, and premature birth can increase the long-term risks for a child, including:

- Learning disabilities
- Slow motor skill development
- Poor social development
- Respiratory problems
- Digestive tract problems
- Vision problems
- Hearing problems

"I encourage pregnant women to follow the recommendations of their obstetricians and the American Dental Association. In most cases, pregnant women can safely seek dental care during pregnancy, including more frequent cleanings and checkups to reduce the risk of pregnancy gingivitis," said Dr. Amini, the Founder of CitiDent, a multi specialty group dental practice in San Francisco. Most dental benefit providers now provide expecting moms additional check up and cleanings benefit, on top of the typical twice a year limitation, so they should really consider this added benefit and visit the dentist at least three times during their pregnancy. "Pregnant women should also practice excellent oral hygiene, including brushing twice a day and flossing daily to remove bacterial buildup and plaque," said Dr. Amini.
