Serving in every capacity, from CEO to chairman of the board of directors, he is the former president of Kaiser Exploration and Mining Company in Oakland, CA, and former president of Kaiser Energy, Inc. and vice president of Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation, Chevron Overseas Petroleum, Standard Oil California and Kaiser Aluminum Exploration Company.
Mr. Gundersen was active as a manager for Geothermal Partners LLC and as a member of the geology advisory board for the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Contributing various articles to professional publications throughout his career in his areas of expertise, he was also a longtime member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists from 1977 to 2017. Mr. Gundersen was involved as the president of the Parents Club at Foothill School in Walnut Creek, CA, for several years.
Born in Elgin, IL, Mr. Gundersen received his undergraduate degree at the University of Nebraska in 1959, the same year he married his wife, Gail Andrews. Earning a Sinclair Fellow for 1960-1961, he then completed a master's degree in 1961. The recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award from the Chancellor's Society in 2015, a Distinguished Alumni from the Burnett Society in 2012, and a Distinguished Alumni from the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in 2011, all through the University of Nebraska Foundation, Mr. Gundersen was also named Man of the Year by New Orleans Jaycees in 1973, and he has been cited in countless editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in Finance and Business. He is the proud parent of three children.
