Since 1965, Dr. Bourassa has acted as staff cardiologist at the Montreal Heart Institute. He held a variety of positions over the course of his career at the medical center, which includes acting as the director of the Clinical Trials Program from 1986 to 1992, the Research Center from 1976 to 1986, and the Cardiovascular Physiology Laboratory from 1972 to 1986. He began his career at the institute in 1965 as a staff hemodynamician in the Hemodynamic Laboratory, where he served for 11 years. Aside from his career at the institute, he also served as the scientific director of the Fonds de la Recherche en Santé du Québec from 1984 to 1990.

Dr. Bourassa graduated from Université Laval with a doctorate in medicine in 1959 and a bachelor's degree in 1953. He is recognized as a certified specialist of internal medicine and cardiology in the Province of Québec and is licensed to practice medicine in the state of California. Dr. Bourassa is a member of the Association des Médecins de Langue Française du Canada, the Club de Recherches Cliniques du Québec, the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation, the Canadian Medical Association, the Council on Clinical Cardiology of the International Society and Federation of Cardiology, the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, the American Federation for Clinical Research, the Montreal Cardiac Society, and the New York Academy of Sciences. He is a former member of the International Study Group for Research in Cardiac Metabolism. He is also a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the International College of Angiology, the American Heart Association, and the European Society of Cardiology. He has served as a foreign correspondent with the Société Française de Cardiologie since 1970 and is recognized as an honorary member of the Spanish Society of Cardiology.

In recognition of his professional excellence and outstanding contributions to the health care industry, Dr. Bourassa was awarded the Career Medal by the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montréal in 2005, the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal by the Governor General of Canada in 2002, the Medal of Merit by the International Society for Heart Research in 2001, the Prix Michel Sarrazin by the Club de Recherches Cliniques du Québec in 2000, the Prix Paul David by the Fonds de recherche de l'Institut de Cardiologie de Montréal in 1997, the 150th Anniversary Medal by the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montréal in 1993, and the Commemorative Medal of the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada by the Governor General of Canada in 1993. He was also presented with the Research Achievement Award by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society in 1992, the Grand prix de la Francophonie by the Académie Française in 1986, the Prix d'excellence by the Association des Médecins de Langue Française du Canada in 1981, and the Jean Lenègre Prize by the Claude Adolphe Nativelle Foundation in 1973. He is also recognized as Cardiologue Émérite by Association des cardiologues du Québec in 2004 and as professor emeritus of the Department of Medicine at the Université de Montréal in 2000. Additionally, Dr. Bourassa was honored as Chevalier de l'Ordre National by the Province of Québec in 1999, and as Officer of the Order of Canada by the Governor General of Canada in 1993.
