NEW YORK, NY, March 29, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Michael Charry with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Charry celebrates many years of experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With more than 60 years of professional experience, Mr. Charry has been on the faculty of the Mannes School of Music at the New School since 1988, and he is a former director of the Mannes Orchestra. In addition, he has held faculty positions with Boston University, Syracuse University and the Juilliard School. He was a member of the conducting staff of The Cleveland Orchestra for eleven years, nine of which under George Szell, whose biography he published in 2011. In addition, he was music director of the Nashville and Canton Symphonies and the Peninsula Music Festival. He has previously been an assistant conductor and first oboist of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, and he has been featured as a guest conductor of the Pittsburgh, Dallas, Syracuse, St. Louis, San Antonio, Kansas City and Louisville Orchestras, as well the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Mr. Charry has conducted the Vancouver (B.C.) Academy Orchestra regularly since 1995, having first conducted them in 1983.

In addition to his work in the United States, Mr. Charry has been featured around the world as a guest conductor with the Belgian Radio and Television Philharmonic Orchestra, the CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra, the Swiss Radio Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the State of Mexico. He served as the artistic director of the New International Music Festival in Seoul, Republic of Korea, having previously been the competition artistic advisor. He also has extensive opera credits, including with the Santa Fe, New York City, and San Francisco Spring Operas, the Kansas City Lyric Theater, the Lake Erie Opera Theater and the Lake George Opera Festival, as well as the Netherlands Opera, the Holland Festival and the Boston Lyric Opera. In addition, Mr. Charry has conducted the José Limón Dance Company and the Martha Graham Dance Company.

Developing an interest in music from a very early age, Mr. Charry began playing the piano when he was five. Initially debating whether he should go into the hard sciences or music, his father advised him to try both and make a choice. He found that, while he enjoyed many other subjects, music was his passion, and he auditioned for the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Once there, he found that his talents were well-suited not only to playing an instrument but to conducting, and he turned his studies in that direction from 1950 to 1952. He later attended the Juilliard School of Music, earning a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in orchestral conducting in the class of Jean Morel in 1955 and 1956, respectively. Awarded a Fulbright Scholarship from 1956 to 1957, he traveled to Hamburg, Germany, to study under Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt. Throughout his studies, Mr. Charry had the opportunity to learn conducting from greats such as Pierre Monteux and Jean Morel, piano from Rosalyn Tureck, Arthur Dann and Josef Raieff, and oboe from Warren Stannard, Robert Zupnik and Lois Wann.

Throughout his career, Mr. Charry has been recognized for his contributions to music. He was named a Martha Baird Rockefeller Grantee, and a three-time Elizabeth Ring Mather and William Gwinn Mather Fund Grantee. Columbia University recognized him with an Alice M. Ditson Award, an award from the Society for the Preservation of Recorded Sound, a Special Merit Award from the Tennessee Arts Commission, and he and the Mannes Orchestra received an ASCAP award for adventuresome programming of contemporary music. However, Mr. Charry considers the greatest challenge of his musical career was his first in-person audition with George Szell that he passed successfully. He felt that anything that came after would not be as difficult, which time has borne out to be true.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Michael Charry has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
