At the start of his career, he joined Duke University's Medical Center. For the next decade, he held a number of roles there, including intern, resident and teaching scholar. Subsequently, he lent his expertise to Vanderbilt University, the VA Hospital in Nashville, TN, and Bowman Gray School of Medicine.

A graduate of Drury College and Tulane University, Dr. Hammon holds a Bachelor of Arts and an MD, respectively. In order to remain alert of changes in the field, he is affiliated with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American Association of Thoracic Surgery and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association when he was president in 2008. Throughout his lengthy career, he served on the editorial boards of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, and The European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery. He has published more than 200 articles in peer reviewed publications and has had 26 visiting professorships in well thought of universities.
