Having grown up on a farm where he learned about the importance of maintaining the land and preventing soil erosion, Mr. Fryrear relied on the skills he had been taught for most of his life and began a career in agricultural research. After receiving a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in agricultural engineering from Colorado State University and Kansas State University, respectively, he went on to conduct research on water conservation and methods of controlling water erosion control as an engineer with the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Texas, Colorado and Kansas. He was also a consultant for British Columbia Hydro from 2009 until 2011, when he began consulting and practicing privately.
During his time with USDA, Mr. Fryrear designed the BSNE dust sampler and laboratory and field wind tunnels that allowed him to measure soil erosion in the laboratory and in the field, and he conducted important research to determine crop damage by wind erosion. This equipment also was used in collecting field erosion data from 22 sites throughout the USA to verify wind erosion models used to estimate potential soil erosion for various farming practices. Modification of the basic design of the BSNE is currently being tested for possible use on Mars.
Mr. Fryrear has written more than 100 articles in scholarly journals and publications and was a consultant on a UNESCO wind erosion research project in Tunisia. He was also the project leader for the development of a revised wind erosion equation and has presented his findings at meetings in countries all over the world. He received an Appreciation Award from Howard College in 1977, and was named a fellow of the Soil Conservation Society of America in 1982. His professional memberships and affiliations include the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, the Soil and Water Conservation Society, of which he was charter president in 1972, the American Society of Agronomy and the New York Academy of Sciences.
