With nearly 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Glasser has been recognized as professor emeritus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) since 2002, having been a wood chemistry professor with the department of sustainable biomaterials (formerly wood science and forest products) since 1980, an associate professor from 1975 to 1980, and assistant professor from 1972 to 1975. In addition to his primary roles with the university, Dr. Glasser served as associate dean for research and graduate studies from 1993 to 1998; as director of the Biobased Materials Technology Development Center from 1986 to 1991; and as an adjunct faculty member with the department of chemical engineering since 1972. From 2013 to 2016, he was the chief scientific officer of Cyclewood Solutions, Inc., and in 1976, he was the director of the Pulp and Paper Research Center of the Instituto de Pesquisas Technologicas (IPT) of São Paulo, S.P., Brazil.

A respected leader in the field, Dr. Glasser has worked with numerous universities, institutions, and corporations. He has been a visiting professor with the University of Grenoble, the National University of Singapore, Kyoto University, the University of Toulouse, Chalmers University of Technology, the University of Guadalajara, the University of Nancy, the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), the University of Pisa, and the University of Freiburg. He served as visiting scientist with the Weyerhaeuser Corporation. Additionally, Dr. Glasser has been a consultant for numerous government and industry organizations, and he participated repeatedly in the creation of start-up companies in his area of research.

Inspired to enter the field of biobased materials following an internship with a Swiss paper company, Dr. Glasser learned about biorefining and extracting value from renewable resources. He began his career at the University of Hamburg, earning a diploma in wood science and technology in 1966, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. rer. nat.) in wood chemistry in 1969. He then relocated to the United States to join the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington, serving as a research associate and research assistant professor from 1969 to 1972.

A respected voice in academia and industry, Dr. Glasser is affiliated with numerous professional and scientific organizations, including Sigma Xi. He is a member of the editorial advisory group of Holzforschung, and formerly of Cellulose Chemistry and Technology (Romania), Cellulose, Journal of Applied Polymer Science, and Journal of Wood Science (Japan). His work was published in multiple prominent scientific, trade, and industry journals and edited books, including the ACS Symposium Series by the American Chemical Society. He served as member and panel chairman of the National Academy of Sciences study on Renewable Resources for Industrial Materials (CORRIM) from 1974-1976. He is the former editor-in-chief of Cellulose, and he holds 20 patents in the field. Dr. Glasser is a member and a fellow of the American Chemical Society, for which he has also served as alternate councilor, councilor, publicity chair, nominations chair, program chair, chair-elect, and general chair.

Throughout his career, Dr. Glasser has received numerous honors and accolades for his achievements. The American Chemical Society's Cellulose, Paper and Textile Division gave him an Anselme Payen Award (2000), and the Division Fellow Award (2003). In 1986, he received the Scientific Achievement Award from the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO). Jointly with his wife, he was the recipient of the George Olmsted Award from the American Paper Institute/Technical Association of the Pulp&Paper Industry (TAPPI) in 1974. However, Dr. Glasser takes the greatest pride in watching his Masters and Ph.D. students excel in their own careers.
