A tenured professor and medical physics director at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, Dr. DeWerd is a well-respected physicist and teacher on campus who has been a part of the community for close to 50 years. Beginning his career at the University of Washington as a research associate in 1970, just after completing his postgraduate studies, he then became a research assistant professor. He then returned to the University of Wisconsin in 1975 as a visiting assistant professor, clinical assistant professor, and finally clinical associate professor. Becoming a full professor with tenure in 1990, Dr. DeWerd's research interests have included radiation metrology, including the calibration of ionization chambers, radiation dosimetry in diagnostic radiology and radiotherapy, quality assurance in radiology and radiotherapy, and luminescence for dosimetry.

From 1983 to 1986, Dr. DeWerd was a director for the Radiation Calibration Laboratory. Recruited again in 1990, he began serving in the same capacity, a position he holds to this day. He was also a manager of product development for Radiation Measurements in Middleton, WI, for a short time in the late 1980s, and in 1990, he began serving as the vice president for Standard Imaging in Madison, WI.

Dr. DeWerd has conducted an extensive amount of research in his field, much of which has been documented in professional journals and in book chapters. He has also been a contributing author of Brachytherapy, Ionization Chambers and Dosimetry, and Thermoluminescence and Mammography. He holds two patents in his field.

A fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, where he previously served as president of the local chapter, Dr. DeWerd was the recipient of a L. Lanzl Honorary Award in 2005, a Farrington Daniels Award in 2008, and a Quimby Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. Dr. DeWerd is also a longtime member of the American Physical Society, the Council on Ionizing Radiation Measurements and Standards, Sigma Xi, and several others. Furthermore, Dr. DeWerd served as a science chairman for the American Cancer Society for the State of Wisconsin from 1986 to 1990.

A recipient of several additional awards, including a Randall Caswell Award and a Best Paper Award in Medical Physics, Dr. DeWerd was a two-time grantee recipient by the National Cancer Institute from 1979 to 1986 as well as from 1994 to 1998. He has also been named to dozens of editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.

Dr. DeWerd completed a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics in 1963, Master of Science in Physics in 1965, and PhD in Physics/Medical Physics in 1970, all at the University of Wisconsin. Married to Vada Mary Anderson since 1963, with whom he has had three sons, he loves to play golf, go fishing, hunting, and backpacking.
