A senior counsel at Faegre Baker Daniels LLP, who was recently named to the Pro Bono Honor Role for 2015-2016, Mr. Levinson is a tenured attorney who has more than four decades of experience in the tax arena and more than 30 years of experience in aviation and insurance, including captive insurers and risk management. In matters of taxation, he advises clients on a wide range of international issues, including worldwide tax planning, transaction structuring, foreign bank account reporting, licensing and international franchising. He has also served as a witness in international tax matters in court. Regarding insurance and risk management, Mr. Levinson's practice advises clients on the strategic design, tax structuring, and implementation of captive insurance companies and RRGs, insurance programs, resolution of tax issues involved in captive insurance arrangements, analysis of domiciles, and surplus lines taxes, among various other matters.

First taken on board in 2005 as partner at Faegre Baker Daniels LLP, a full-service law firm that provides business solutions to local, national, and international organizations in 13 locations across the United States, the United Kingdom and China, Mr. Levinson formerly served as managing director for KPMG for two years, spent 11 years with Northwest Airlines, Inc., as vice president in numerous areas of the business, and for 9 years was a vice president with Marriott Corporation, with responsibilities in the tax department and in international project finance. Earlier in his career, he served as a senior tax attorney for Pepper, Hamilton and Scheetz in Washington, D.C., and as a reviewer and assistant branch chief and attorney/advisor in the office of the chief counsel's interpretative division of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). While with the IRS, he was assigned to the Department of Justice as a technical advisor assisting in the "Project Haven" criminal tax investigation involving offshore tax havens.

Currently teaching the international tax course at the University of Minnesota Law School, Mr. Levinson formerly taught a two-semester international tax course in the graduate tax program at Georgetown University Law Center. One of the highlights of his career, teaching allows him to give back to the future generation of attorneys by interacting with, conveying information to, and helping them become excited about tax law. Mr. Levinson has also presented numerous times in his field of expertise, most recently as a co-presenter for an introduction to and overview of U.S. tax treaties for the Minnesota State Bar Association, on international tax matters to the Oregon State Bar Association, and to various Committees of the American Bar Association, and as author and co-author of a number of articles in such publications as The International Journal of Franchising Law. Currently serving on the executive committee and board of directors for the Minnesota Center for Fiscal Excellence, he has chaired several committees for the International Air Transport Association and the U.S. Air Transport Association throughout his career, including the taxation committee and the international risk managers' forum.

Named to a variety of legal publications for his outstanding work, including Best Lawyers in Litigation and Controversy Tax every year since 2012 and Best Lawyers in America in Tax Law every year since 2010, and named to the Top Lawyers in the State numerous times, Mr. Levinson continues to serve his local community by volunteering as a deputy sheriff for the Carver County Sheriff's Mounted Posse. He has also been known for his work as a board member of Search, Rescue, and Recovery Resources of Minnesota, and is active in his place of worship as an Usher Captain.

Earning a Bachelor of Arts in political science with distinction at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1969, Mr. Levinson then spent three years in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant with two tours to Vietnam before completing a Doctor of Jurisprudence with high honors at The George Washington University in 1975 and LLM in taxation with honors at Georgetown University in 1978. He has since been admitted to practice by the D.C., Virginia and Minnesota Bar Associations, the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. District Court for D.C., the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the D.C. Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Born in Mineola, NY, he is the proud father of four and grandfather of three who also enjoys playing golf, boating, equestrian show jumping, skiing, and art.
