With more than 33 years of professional experience, Dr. Bruning took early retirement from Ohio University as Provost Emeritus in 1993. Prior to his retirement, he served in a variety of roles with the university, including Provost from 1981 to 1993, and Vice Provost for Planning from 1978 to 1981. In addition, he served as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1977-78, Acting Dean from 1976 to 1977, and, Chair of the Department of Psychology from 1972 to 1976. He also served as Acting President in 1991-92.
Following his early retirement, he served in a variety of interim and acting administrative roles including Director of the Enterprise Project, Vice President for Regional Higher Education, Interim Provost at Shawnee State University, plus he chaired committees for the Ohio Board of Regents that resulted in dramatically improved curriculum articulation which eased student transfer from two to four year institutions.
Dr. Bruning began his career at Doane University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. He continued his studies at the University of Iowa, earning both a Master of Arts (1961) and a Doctor of Philosophy (1962) with thesis, and, dissertation, in less than three years. As a full-time faculty member for the first portion of his career, he was promoted from beginning Assistant Professor to Full Professor in less than six years. Ohio University recognized him for his outstanding service as a faculty member and administrator with an honorary doctorate in 1992 and as Trustee Professor of Psychology in 1993.
Throughout his career, Dr. Bruning has received numerous honors and accolades for his achievements. During his first ten years as a full time faculty member, Dr. Bruning directed seventeen doctoral dissertations, five of which won national awards. As a result, the American Psychological Association recognized him with a special award for "Direction and Encouragement of Outstanding and Creative Research". He subsequently was further recognized by the APA by being selected to serve as a Visiting Scientist (1969-1974), Visiting Lecturer (1969-1974) and APA Clinical Program Evaluator (1979-1981).
In addition to being the author of over 75 publications, professional papers and chapters in books, he also is the co-author of two books. The first, The Computational Handbook of Statistics, has remained in print through four editions for over 50 years and has been cited by well over 1500 researchers. Dr. Bruning also has been awarded numerous grants from the National Institutes of Mental Health, the ESSO Foundation, the Ohio Board of Regents, and, the EPDA.
Dr. Bruning retained an interest in teaching throughout his entire career, always teaching at least one or two classes per year while serving in his various administrative capacities. During his career, he has taught well over 17,000 students, ranging in class sizes from small graduate seminars to classes of over 3000 students in Memorial Auditorium. As a result of his outstanding teaching, he was one of the first three awardees of the title University Professor and has had the Center for Teaching and Learning at Ohio University named in his honor. Dr. Bruning credits much of his success to the faculty and education he received at the University of Iowa Psychology Department, and especially, his mentor and dissertation direction, Dr. Milton Rosenbaum.
