George Peter Canellos Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Canellos is a senior physician of the hematology-oncology service at Brigham and Women's Hospital, as well as for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). In addition, he has been the William Rosenberg professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School for more than 30 years. Specializing in medical oncology with focuses in chronic lymphocytic leukemia, lymphoma, breast cancer, Hodgkin's Disease, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and medical oncology, Dr. Canellos is the chair of the lymphoma committee and a principal investigator at DFCI.

Dr. Canellos began his career by earning his undergraduate degree at Harvard University in 1956 and a Doctor of Medicine at Columbia University in 1960. He then completed an internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and he worked as a clinical associate at the National Cancer Institute and as a research fellow at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. From 1975 to 1995, he was chief of DFCI's division of Medical Oncology and as medical director for network development for Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare. He is affiliated with such hospitals as Children's Hospital Medicine Center, Georgetown University Hospital, and Beth Israel Hospital.

The former editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the Oncologist, Dr. Canellos is an editorial board member of the European journal of the Cancer and Clinical Oncology, the Journal of Internal Medicine, the Current Opinion in Oncology, and the Hematology/Oncology Clinics of North America. He is a past president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and an elected fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians of London and Scotland.

Dr. Canellos is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine in hematology and medical oncology. He served as a lieutenant commander for two years with the U.S. Public Health Service after earning his MD and earned a Doctor Honoris Causa from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1997. Dr. Canellos has been the recipient of numerous honors, including a Fischer Lecture Award from Yale University in 2006, a Frank Moran Award from the University of Michigan in 2006, and a San Salvatore Award from the International Lymphoma Conference in 2005. Married with three children and one grandchild, Dr. Canellos has been featured in multiple editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the World.
