Dr. McPherson is well-known as a George Henry Davis professor emeritus of U.S. history at the prestigious Princeton University. Originally hired as a member of the faculty in 1962, he soon after became a full professor and George Henry Davis professor, remaining in position for 23 years until officially retiring in 2004. Honored for his teachings, Dr. McPherson was named the Jefferson Lecturer in the humanities by the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2000.

An American Civil War historian, Dr. McPherson has spoken on contemporary issues and has been recognized for his work on behalf of the preservation of Civil War battlefields. A former president of the Protect Historic America, he lobbied against the construction of a Disney theme park near the Manassas battlefield. He also served on the boards of the Civil War Trust and the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites and sat on the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission.

An established author, one of Dr. McPherson's greatest achievements was in winning a Pulitzer Prize for his book "Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era" in 1989. He has authored over a dozen more books, including "Embatted Rebel: Jefferson Davis as Commander in Chief" in 2014 and "The War That Forged a Nation: Why the Civil War Still Matters" in 2015, as well as "This Mighty Scourge" in 2007, which is a series of essays about the American Civil War. Notably, he was also the co-recipient of a Lincoln Prize in 2009 for his book "Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief," published in 2008. Currently, he serves on the editorial board for the Encyclopedia Britannica.

Dr. McPherson was the president of the American Historical Association from 2003 to 2004 and the Society of American Historians from 1999 to 2000. He has been a longtime member of the American Academy of the Arts and Sciences, the Organization of American Historians, the Southern History Association, the American Philosophical Society and Phi Beta Kappa.

Born in Valley City, ND, Dr. McPherson graduated from St. Peter High School, and later received a bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1958, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in 1963. He received a Pritzker Military Library Literature Award in 2007, a $100,000 prize for lifetime achievement in military history. He was the first recipient of this prize. That same year, Dr. McPherson received a Samuel Eliot Morison Prize for lifetime achievement in military history, which was granted by the Society for Military History. Named in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, as well as many more editions of Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the East, Dr. McPherson has been married to his wife for just over 60 years and has one daughter.
