Dr. Robert Mondavi, Torrance Dentist, Explains the Link Found between Middle-Aged Tooth Loss and Risk of Coronary Heart Disease

TORRANCE, CA, May 01, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- According to a recent study presented at the American Heart Association's Epidemiology and Prevention Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Scientific Sessions 2018, tooth loss in midlife is linked to a higher risk of heart disease. Studies have previously linked dental problems such as gum disease with diabetes, inflammation and smoking, all of which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Torrance dentist, Dr. Robert Mondavi, explains the link between middle-aged tooth loss and the risk of coronary heart disease.

In previous studies, the association between cardiovascular problems and tooth loss has been found with cumulative tooth loss, or tooth loss that occurs over a person's lifetime. These teeth are often lost due to trauma, orthodontic treatment or childhood decay. Tooth loss in midlife is more likely to be caused by inflammation, which is strongly correlated with other chronic health problems.

This recent study, which was performed by researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Tulane University School of Public Health, evaluated studies of adults between 45 and 69 years who did not have heart disease at the onset of the studies. Those who lost two or more teeth over an eight-year period had a 23 percent higher risk of heart disease while those who lost just one tooth did not have a significant increase in risk.

Tooth loss is not inevitable. Healthy dental habits can reduce the risk of tooth loss, especially in middle age when the risk increases due to periodontal disease. If a tooth is lost, it can be replaced using dental implants, which are the gold standard in tooth restorations.
