With more than 40 years of professional experience, Mr. Madrick was an economics columnist with The New York Times and has been a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books since 1995. He is the author of seven books and several others with collaborators on politics and economics. He also runs a foundation on social issues, The Bernard L. Schwartz Rediscovering Government Initiative. In addition, he has written extensively for numerous other publications, including the Boston Review, The Nation, the Washington Post, American Prospect, the Boston Globe, Newsday, the Los Angeles Times, Institutional Investor and the New York Times. He has appeared on several television and radio networks as well, including CNN, NPR, NBC, CNBC, CBS and PBS. Earlier in his career, Mr. Madrick worked as an executive assistant to the president of Columbia Pictures from 1979 to 1980, as an editor and columnist for Business Week from 1975 to 1978, and as a writer and columnist for Money Magazine from 1972 to 1975.

Mr. Madrick was initially inspired to study political economics by the likes of John Kenneth Galbraith, John Maynard Keynes, Thorstein Veblen, Karl Polanyi and Garry Wills. He began his career at New York University (NYU), where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1969. He went on to study at Harvard University, where he received a Master of Business Administration in 1971.

Mr. Madrick has received numerous honors throughout his career for his work in the field, including an Emmy Award in 1986. He was the salutatorian for his class at NYU in 1969, and he received the Page One Award from the Newspaper Guild in 1979. However, he considers the highlights of his career the publication of his books, writing for the New York Review, and working with Senator Ted Kennedy as a policy consultant and writing a book. He is proud of his second place PEN Galbraith Award for his book, The Case for Big Government, in 2009.
