Dr. Cohen has worked as an adjunct professor of surgery for the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences from 2000 to 2006. Dr. Cohen has also been a clinical associate professor of cardiothoracic surgery for UT Health Sciences Center San Antonio from 1992 to 2006, clinical professor of surgery for Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences from 1992 to 2000, clinical associate professor of surgery for Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences from 1985 to 1992, a tenured associate professor of cardiothoracic surgery at UT Health Sciences Center San Antonio from 1987 to 1992, and an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Wisconsin from 1984 to 1987.
Previously, Dr. Cohen held the roles of assistant professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences from 1983 to 1985, clinical assistant professor of cardiothoracic surgery for UT Health Sciences Center San Antonio in 1984, assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences from 1982 to 1983, and instructor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania from 1979 to 1981. Dr. Cohen was a cardiac transplant fellow at the Texas Heart Institute in 1993 and cardiothoracic surgery resident at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 1979 to 1981. At the Affiliated Hospitals of the University of Washington, he held the positions of chief resident from 1978 to 1979 and surgery resident from 1976 to 1978. Dr. Cohen began his career at Johns Hopkins Hospital as a surgery resident from 1973 to 1974 and surgery intern from 1972 to 1973.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Cohen pursued an education at Douglas MacArthur High School in San Antonio, graduating in 1964. In 1968, he followed this accomplishment with a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry at Rice University. That same year, Dr. Cohen was recognized as a Distinguished Military Graduate by the Reserve Officers' Training Corps at Rice University, and he was Vice President of the Student Association.
Dr. Cohen continued his studies at the Washington University in St. Louis, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1972. He would return to scholarly ventures in 1999, receiving a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, summa cum laude, at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Cohen concluded his academic efforts at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, obtaining a Master of Public Administration in 2003.
After certification by the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1973, Dr. Cohen has been credentialled to practice surgery by the American Board of Surgery in 1981, 1991, and 2000, and credentialled to practice cardiothoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in 1983, 1992, 2001, and 2012. He was additionally certified in surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery in 1989. He has also been trained in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support by the American Heart Association, as well as in Advanced Trauma Life Support by the American College of Surgeons. He was registered as an Engineer-in-Training by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers in 1999. Dr. Cohen has active medical licenses in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Texas, Montana, Louisiana, North Dakota and Kentucky, with prior licensure in Massachusetts, Washington, Maryland and Colorado.
Dr. Cohen has served on the staff of the Nix Healthcare System since 2005, the Southwest General Hospital since 2003, the Methodist Healthcare System since 2004 which are all in San Antonio, as well as the HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital (Eau Claire WI) since 2014, and Covenant Hospital (Lubbock TX) since 2014. Furthermore, Dr. Cohen has been on the staff of the Baptist Healthcare System since 2004, the Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital from 2016 to 2017, and Christus Santa Rosa Health System from 2002 to 2016. He worked part-time in hyperbaric medicine and wound care for Wound Healing Associates, P.A., from 2016 to 2017. He was an advisory board member for the Center for Advanced Bioengineering for Soldier Survivability at the Georgia Institute of Technology from 2009 to 2013, and he was the cardiothoracic surgery service chief at the City Centre Hospital of Christus Santa Rosa Health System in 2012 where he had been on the staff since 2002. Dr. Cohen was also appointed to the Advisory Council for the College of Engineering for the University of Texas at San Antonio from 2000 to 2009, and the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance from 1993 to 2002. Additionally, Dr. Cohen has served on the Emergency Preparedness Committee of the Bexar County Medical Society since 2007 and as chairman of the committee since 2015. He has served as chairman of the Medical Academy of the State Guard Association of the United States since 2017.
Dr. Cohen was on the staff of the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio from 1987 to 1992. Moreover, Dr. Cohen contributed to the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital as chief of the cardiothoracic surgery service from 1991 to 1992 and director of the surgical intensive care unit from 1988 to 1992. On the staff of William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital and the University of Wisconsin Hospital from 1984 to 1987 in Madison WI, he served as the chief of the thoracic surgery service at the Middleton VA Hospital from 1986 to 1987. During this time, Dr. Cohen was on the research grant review committee for the Wisconsin Affiliate of the American Heart Association.
Dr. Cohen has an equally prolific career serving the U.S. Army, beginning his enlistment as a flight and group surgeon with the 10th Special Forces Group at Fort Devens from 1974 to 1981. He would go on to serve as chief of the Department of Cardiovascular Physiology at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research from 1981 to 1983, the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda from 1981 to 1983, and the cardiothoracic surgery service of the Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston from 1983 to 1984. Dr. Cohen was in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1976 to 1981 and from 1984 to 1992.
Back on active duty, Dr. Cohen was the commander of the 786th Medical Detachment in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm from 1990 to 1991. Following this tour, he would serve at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in multiple capacities, including as assistant chief of the cardiothoracic surgery service from 1992 to 1993, chief of cardiac transplantation from 1993 to 2002, residency program director from 1993 to 2002, and chief of cardiothoracic surgery service from 1993 to 2002. He was the cardiovascular surgery consultant to the Surgeon General of the United States Army from 1999 to 2002. Dr. Cohen was on the 945th Forward Surgical Team during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2003 to 2004.
Towards the latter years of his military service, Dr. Cohen was the senior clinical consultant for the Directorate for Combat Doctrine Development at the Army Medical Department Center and School at Fort Sam Houston from 2003 to 2004. Prior to his retirement from active duty in the U.S. Army, he was the deputy commander for clinical services at the 86th Combat Support Hospital in Fort Campbell and Iraq from 2004 to 2005, senior surgeon with the 86th Combat Support Hospital Task Force South at Tallil, Iraq, in 2005, and with the cardiothoracic surgery service at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston from 2005 to 2006. Following his retirement from the U.S. Army, Dr. Cohen served the Texas State Guard as a colonel and chief medical officer of the Alamo Medical Response Group from 2009 to 2013, and brigadier general and commander of the Texas Medical Brigade from 2014 to 2017.
Dr. Cohen has found much success with his creative works as well, having contributed articles to such esteemed journals as the Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Military Medicine, the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the Journal of Trauma, and the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, among many others. He has further contributed abstracts to several major publications, including Chest, ASAIO Abstracts, the American Review of Respiratory Disease, and the Journal of Investigative Surgery. Having written chapters for "Reflux Esophagitis and the Angelchik Prosthesis" in 1987 and "Esophageal Disorders: Pathology and Therapy" in 1985, Dr. Cohen has also been an invited lecturer at various conferences and symposia.
Dr. Cohen remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has been a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, the Society of University Surgeons and the Association for Academic Surgery. Dr. Cohen previously maintained membership in the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Texas Transplant Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs.
He was a member of the North American Chapter of the International Society of Cardiovascular Surgery, the Academy of Surgical Research, the Southwestern Surgical Congress, the San Antonio Surgical Society and the San Antonio Cardiology Society. He has also been a member of the Madison Surgical Society, the Wisconsin Thoracic Society, the Texas Medical Association, the J. Bradley Aust Surgical Society, and the Uniformed Services University Surgical Associates. He is most proud of being selected for the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
He belonged to the Rotary Club of San Antonio from 2006 to 2011. Dr. Cohen has been a lifetime member of the Society of U.S. Army Flight Surgeons since 1975 as well as a lifetime member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the U.S. since 1982, the Bexar County Medical Society since 1988, the National Guard Association of Texas since 2011 and the State Guard Association of the United States since 2009. He was a student member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers and a student member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has been an associate member of the Society of Medical Consultants to the Armed Forces, and he was elected to the Nominating Committee for the Association for Academic Surgery from 1986 to 1987. Dr. Cohen was the regional chairman of the Healthcare Professionals for John McCain during the McCain Presidential Campaign and the Bexar County co-chairman of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Campaign for Governor of the State of Texas.
As a youth, Dr. Cohen was an Eagle Scout. Since 1988, Dr. Cohen has been an adult member of the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a Webelos Den Leader from 1988 to 1992, as assistant scout master of Troop 515 from 1988 to 2006, on the Troop 515 Committee from 2006 to 2011, on the executive board for the Southern Region from 2010 to 2012, and on the National Health and Safety Committee since 2006. Furthermore, he contributed to BSA National Jamborees as deputy chief medical officer for external affairs from 2008 to 2010, chief of external hospital interface in 2013, and on the jamboree medical staff in 1997, 2001, 2005, and 2017 as well as serving on the medical staff for the Bechtel Summit Scout Reserve in 2016.
Dr. Cohen was the vice chair of the University of Texas at San Antonio Engineering Honor Society from 1998 to 1999, secretary-treasurer and president of the San Antonio Cardiology Society between 1997 and 1999, and he has served as chairman of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health Medical Reserve Corps since 2017.
Considering his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Cohen has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He was honored as an Academic All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy in 1998, and he also received the National Collegiate Engineering Award from the United States Achievement Academy in that same year. He has been recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Angiology in 1988, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1984, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology in 1984, and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians in 1984, and he was inducted into the Henry Harkins Society in 1978. He was selected for the National Deans List from 1996 to 1999 and elected to the Golden Key National Honor Society in 1997.
Featured as a Texas Super Doctor by Texas Monthly magazine from 2011 to 2013, Dr. Cohen has been highlighted among Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities in 1968 and 1999, Kipling's Who's Who in Leading Business Professionals in 2010, and Strathmore's Who's Who from 2000 to 2001. He has also been recognized as a Distinguished Graduate by the U.S. Army Flight Surgeons School in 1975, an Outstanding Graduate by the Northeast Independent School District in 2000, and an Alley-Sheridan Scholar-in-Residence by the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education from 2002 to 2003. Additionally, Dr. Cohen received the Distinguished Service Award from the Bexar County Medical Society in 2018.
Decorated with the Bronze Star Medal for his efforts in Operation Desert Storm in 1991, Dr. Cohen has received more than 30 other awards from the U.S. Military including the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with three Oakleaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, an Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Gold Hourglass Device and "M" Device, and the Southwest Asia Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, among others. Earning the Kuwait Liberation Medal from both the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Government of Kuwait, Dr. Cohen has also been presented with the Superior Service Medal from the State of Texas, the Texas State Guard Service Medal, the Texas Faithful Service Medal, and the Texas Medal of Merit, as well as several honors from the State Guard Association of the United States. He was inducted into the Texas State Guard Honorary Reserve in 2017.
Dr. Cohen is married to his wife Deborah who has been the love of his life for 42 years. They have five sons: John, Christopher, Scott, Joshua and Benjamin as well as a grandson Max Kokinda and his wife Carrie.
