Gail S. Phillips Celebrates 35 Years of Excellence in Music and Music Education

Ms. Phillips earned inclusion into the Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame



Gail Phillips is in her 32nd year of teaching.

    SPOKANE VALLEY, WA, May 22, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gail Susan Phillips has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Gail Phillips is in her 32nd year of teaching. She is a native of Spokane, and received her BA in Music Education and BM in Music Performance from Eastern Washington University in 1985 and received her MA in 1992.

Her first teaching assignment was in Port Townsend where she taught orchestra and band (5th-12th) grade. Positions followed at Gonzaga Prep High School, Auburn, Medical Lake, Mead, Federal Way, Puyallup and Spokane Public Schools. Gail is excited to be back in the area as the Band Director at Bowdish Middle School in the Central Valley School District. She also student taught at Bowdish in 1985 with LaVerne Overbeck who recently retired.

In addition to her teaching assignments she has been active at the WMEA conventions since 1988 as a presenter and serves as a clinician and adjudicator for numerous contests and festivals throughout the state. The Kalles Junior High Concert Band from Puyallup School District performed at the WMEA conference at the band banquet in 2004 in Yakima. Gail has also had numerous student teachers over the years.

Gail has received personal awards that include the Washington State Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in Education in May of 2000, the Teacher of the Year in 1997 for the Federal Way School District, Educator of the Year in 1993 in the Auburn School District and Valley Region Educator of the Year from the Puyallup School District in 2004. In February 2018 Gail earned inclusion into the Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame. Gail was a member of the Tacoma Concert Band and also played trumpet in the Coeur d'Alene Symphony and now plays flugelhorn in the Spokane British Brass Band and other community ensembles. She also plays other instruments but really enjoys playing fiddle music on her violin. In her free time she enjoys gardening, tennis, basketball, and spending time at the lake. She also enjoys taking care of and spending time with her Mom who is 97 years old.
