Alvin L. Kwiram, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Emeritus professor of chemistry and emeritus vice provost for research at the University of Washington, Dr. Kwiram spent 37 years on campus, beginning as an associate professor of chemistry in 1970. During his tenure, he was also chairman of the chemistry department for 10 years between 1977 and 1987. Focusing much of his research on seeking to expand the range of magnetic resonance methods and the pursuit of fundamental studies made possible by such methods, he also documented his research by authoring and co-authoring many peer reviewed articles.

Dr. Kwiram was formerly on the faculty of Harvard University for six years and was a research associate in the physics department at Stanford University and an Alfred A. Noyes instructor at the California Institute of Technology, beginning in 1962. He has held a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and a B.A. in physics from Walla Walla College since 1958, and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology since 1963. He received an honorary doctorate from Andrews University in 1995.

During his career in academia, Dr. Kwiram served on various boards and committees such as the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, was executive director of the National Science Foundation Center for Materials and Devices Information Technology Research, served on the board of directors for the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, and was a visiting professor at the University of Stuttgart in Germany, Oxford University in the U.K., and the University of Berkeley in California.

An elected fellow of the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Kwiram is also a member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences, and Sigma Xi. He was the recipient of a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, a Woodrow Wilson fellow, and a Sloan Research fellow from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and received an Eastman-Kodak Scientific Award, and a University Industry Relations Award from the Council for Chemical Research.
Since retiring, Dr. Kwiram was instrumental in the creation of the Clean Energy Institute. He initiated the project on a volunteer basis and it now involves 25 faculty researchers and 100 graduate students. The institute has since been recognized as one of the leading clean energy institutions in the world. Dr. Kwiram worked on the project for over five years.

Born in Canada, Dr. Kwiram moved to the United States in 1954 and later married his wife Verla Rae Michel in 1964, having two children. He has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, as well as many editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
