Joining the Bethlehem Steel Corporation as an attorney in 1967, Mr. Barnette served in a legal capacity until 1992 when he was elected as chairman and CEO. Retiring from the organization in 2000, he then became of counsel to the international law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP from 2000 to 2011. Bethlehem Steel Corporation was a steel and shipbuilding company that began operations in 1904 and was America's second-largest steel producer and largest shipbuilder. Focusing much of his career in the areas of corporate, litigation, international trade, government affairs and corporate governance, Mr. Barnette earned his bachelor's degree with high honors from West Virginia University and Doctor of Jurisprudence at Yale University, and was a Fulbright Scholar in international law at Manchester University, England, and attended Harvard Business School. He is admitted to practice law in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, D.C. and West Virginia, several federal courts and the Supreme Court of the United States.

Mr. Barnette has spoken and testified numerous times before congressional committees. He served as director and chairman of the International Iron and Steel Institute in Brussels, Belgium, was director and chairman of the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington, DC, was a member of the Business Council and the Business Roundtable, and was chairman of the Pennsylvania Business Roundtable. He has also served as a director of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, MetLife and Owens Corning, and was a member of the Norfolk Southern Advisory Board. Some of Mr. Barnette's public services included being appointed by President Ronald Reagan to serve on the Council of the Administrative Conference of the United States and being appointed by President George H. W. Bush to the President's Trade Advisory Committee for Trade Policy, where he was later reappointed by President Bill Clinton.

Mr. Barnette has been a professor, executive-in-residence and trustee at Moravian College since 2004. Earlier in his career, he spent time as a law tutor at Yale University and lecturer at the University of Maryland. He has served in various other educational capacities as well, including as chairman and a member of the Yale Law School Fund Board since 2000, former chair of the West Virginia University Foundation, former chair of the board of governors at West Virginia University, and a Trustee of Lehigh University.

A longstanding member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, the American Law Institute and the National Museum of Industrial History, Mr. Barnette also served as president of the Association of General Counsel, chair of the American Society of Corporate Secretaries, and as director of the National Center for State Courts.

A Major of a Strategic Intelligence Detachment of the U.S. Army Reserve for eight years, he also served with the Counterintelligence Corps for two years, Mr. Barnette received five honorary Doctor of Laws from universities across the country, has been included in more than 85 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Law, and has received multiple awards for his career and philanthropy. Most recently, Mr. Barnette received a Silver Beaver Award from the Minsi Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America in 2011, was named an Outstanding Philanthropist by the Association of Fundraising Professional in 2004, and received a Distinguished Community Leadership Award by the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce in 1999. Married to Loris Joan Harner since 1957, Mr. Barnette has two children.
