With more than 40 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Burr has worked for Indiana University as a distinguished professor since 2013, professor of anatomy since 1990, and professor of bioengineering since 1990. During this time, he has served as the associate vice chancellor for research for Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) since 2012 and chairman of the department of anatomy and cell biology at Indiana University from 1990 to 2010. Prior to these appointments, he held multiple positions at West Virginia University, including as professor from 1986 to 1990, associate professor from 1983 to 1986, and assistant professor of anatomy and orthopedic surgery from 1980 to 1983. Dr. Burr began his career at the University of Kansas Medical Center as an assistant professor of anatomy from 1978 to 1980 and an instructor of anatomy from 1977 to 1978.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Burr pursued an education at Beloit College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1973. He followed this accomplishment with a Master of Arts at the University of Colorado Boulder in 1974. Dr. Burr concluded his studies at the University of Colorado Boulder in 1977, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.

Beyond his responsibility within the field, Dr. Burr has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. Active with the American Institute of Biological Sciences for the National Academy of Sciences since 1990, he contributed to the Special Grants Review Committee for the National Institutes of Health from 1996 to 2000 and since 2016. Previously, Dr. Burr was on the advisory board of directors for the Primate Foundation of Arizona from 1978 to 2008, the clerk witness and service for the First Friends Meeting from 1999 to 2001, the secretary of the Classic Ragtime Society of Indiana from 1997 to 1998, on the biochemistry study section of the Arthritis Foundation from 1992 to 1995, and the chairman of the troop committee for the Boy Scouts of America from 1993 to 1995.

Dr. Burr furthered his lauded efforts on the Administrative Board for the Epworth United Methodist Church from 1992 to 1993, as a consultant to National Aeronautics and Space Administration from 1990 to 1991, with the Office of Technology Assessment for the United States Congress in 1990, on the advisory group for the Treatment of Human Remains for the Monongahela National Forest Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1989, and as a consultant to the County Medical Examiner in Morgantown, WV, from 1983 to 1989. Additionally, he held the roles of secretary for the Cub Scout Pack Committee in 1989, linesman for the Morgantown Soccer League in 1988, and president for the First Ward School PTA in Morgantown, WV, from 1987 to 1988.

Dr. Burr found success with his written works, having been on the editorial boards for Journal of Bone and Mineral Research Plus since 2017, the Journal of Orthopaedic Research since 2014, Osteoporosis International since 2009, Calcified Tissue International since 2000, and the Journal of Biomechanics since 1999. He has also been appointed to the editorial boards for the Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism since 1994, Actualizaciones en Osteologia since 2014, and the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research since 2014. Notably, Dr. Burr held the title of associate editor for Experimental Biology and Medicine from 2006 to 2009, Bone from 2004 to 2013, and the Journal of Musculoskeletal Neuronal Interactions from 2004 to 2013.

Since 2013, Dr. Burr has continued his creative success as the editor-in-chief of Current Osteoporosis Reports and the editor of Bone. Likewise, he recently authored "Skeletal Tissue Mechanics, Second Edition" in 2016, "Basic and Applied Bone Biology" in 2013, "Bridging the Gap Between Dental and Orthopaedic Implants" in 2002, "Musculoskeletal Fatigue and Stress Fracture" in 2001, "Skeletal Tissue Mechanics" in 1998, and "Structure, Function & Adaptation of Compact Bone" in 1989. Furthermore, Dr. Burr has established his proficiency as a writer by contributing many articles to esteemed journals in his industry.

In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Burr remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, such as the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the Orthopedic Research Society and the American Association of Anatomists. He maintained involvement with the American Association of Anatomists as president from 2007 to 2009, as secretary-treasurer from 2004 to 2005, as chairman of the Journal Trust Fund Committee from 2002 to 2004, and on the Executive Committee from 1998 to 2001. The chair of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Fibrous Dysplasia Foundation since 2016, he was associated with the Orthopaedic Research Society as program chair from 2005 to 2006 and chair of the membership committee from 2002 to 2003. Also serving as president for the Orthopaedic Research Society from 2008 to 2009 and the Association of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Neurobiology Chairpersons from 2001 to 2002, Dr. Burr has also been on the board of directors for the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology from 2014 to 2018, as well as the International Society for Musculoskeletal and Neuronal Interactions from 1999 to 2000 and from 2002 to 2008.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Burr has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. A research grantee of the National Institutes of Health since 1988, he was recognized as a fellow of the Orthopaedic Research Society in 2018 and the American Association of Anatomists in 2009. He has been presented with the Glenn W. Irwin Jr., MD, Experience Excellence Award from IUPUI in 2017, the Henry Gray Scientific Achievement Award from the American Association of Anatomists in 2015, the Excellence in Faculty Mentoring Award for Basic Science from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2014, and the Glenn W. Irwin Junior Distinguished Faculty Award from the Indiana University Alumni Association in 2010. He has also garnered the Gideon A. Rodan Excellence in Mentorship Award from the American Society of Bone Mineral Research in 2010, the Borelli Award from the American Society of Biomechanics in 2008, and an Award from the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation from 1985 to 1986. Dr. Burr was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the Midwest.
