Jin-Woo Kim, PhD, Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Contributions to Earth Sceince

Using sophisticated satellite and atmospheric monitoring, Dr. Kim studies the relationship of sea ice and the effect of its activity on climate change

Dr. Kim has been conducting studies on the melting of sea ice, and has journeyed to the Antarctic, the Arctic, and Greenland to measure and survey the conditions of ice in those seas.

GYEONGGI, REPUBLIC OF KOREA, July 09, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jin-Woo Kim, PhD has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Now a senior researcher at the LIG Nex1 Space Imaging Research and Development Lab in Republic of Korea, Dr. Kim is currently a renowned developer of high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR), which provides highly detailed, three-dimensional images independent of altitude. These apparatuses can be mounted on either satellites or airborne vessels to provide in-depth information about an area without disturbing it, a vital technique used to survey Dr. Kim's ongoing study of the sea ices of the world and their relationship to global climate change. Since 2013, he has been studying the ice mass balance in the Amundsen Sea in West Antarctica and contributing to the majority consensus of climate change.

Dr. Kim was born in Incheon, Republic of Korea, in the '70s, when the biggest atmospheric concern for scientists was industrial smog. As he grew up and attended Inha University to study physical oceanography, climate consensus slowly changed, leading to Dr. Kim's specialization in earth and environmental sciences at Seoul National University. Of particular interest to climate scientists are the polar ice caps, which have captured public interest as the most dramatic indicator of the huge effects of humans on the environment. Dr. Kim has been conducting studies on the melting of sea ice, and has journeyed to the Antarctic, the Arctic, and Greenland to measure and survey the conditions of ice in those seas.

Dr. Kim was granted a number of scholarships from the Korean Ministry of Education and the Korean Society of Remote Sensing for his expertise on a slew of operating software suites, which he applied to develop SAR on airborne and space systems, ground-based scatterometer systems, and advanced altimeter systems. He earned a PhD in 2014 after traveling to the coldest parts of the world to test his various technologies. Dr. Kim worked briefly with UNIST in Republic of Korea before becoming a senior researcher with LIG NEX1, which provides technologies to both the Republic of Korean and international markets.

In addition to measuring sea ice and capturing meteorological developments, Dr. Kim's technology finds applications in advanced military operations, and he served with the Korea Army Training Center to the rank of sergeant from 1999 to 2002. In recognition of his contributions to modern technology, he was selected for inclusion in the 2016 volume of Who's Who in the World. Together with his partner, Ji-Yung Jung, Dr. Kim works hard to make a better world for their daughter, Bo-Min Kim.
