Dr. Richmond is a tenured mechanical and aerospace engineer who retired in 1994 as the director of engineering with Brunswick Defense in Costa Mesa, CA, after six years with the organization. He formerly served as director of engineering in advanced development of Ford Aerospace for 28 years between 1959 and 1987, was an assistant group leader of aeronautical performance with Douglas Aircraft Company and was an aerodynamicist with Lockheed Martin Corporation, formerly known as Lockheed Aircraft Company.

During his 42-year career, Dr. Richmond taught briefly as an adjunct associate professor in the School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine, and as a teaching and research assistant at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA. Additionally, he spent time as a subgroup leader for the NATO Industrial Advisory Group #16 in Brussels, Belgium, and for Shelby American Automobiles in Los Angeles and was an aerodynamics consultant with Douglas Aircraft.

Responsible for experimentally proving that skin friction force on long, slender cylinders was several times that on flat plates, Dr. Richmond also completed approximately 3,700 hours of flying over the course of his career. A former flight instructor for the Young Eagles Program for ages 7 through 17, he taught the program while serving as a lieutenant at the Orange County Sheriff's Aero Squadron between 1976 and 2012. He hopes to continue to fly planes and do maintenance on his own aircraft in the coming years.

Awarded with a four-year research assistantship by the California Institute of Technology and a two-year grant and teaching assistantship by the California Institute of Technology, Dr. Richmond has been cited in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Finance and Industry and Who's Who in the World. An associate fellow and chairman of the Orange County section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, he is also a member, former president and board chairman of the Skylarks of Southern California and member and former commander of the Western States Association of Sheriff's Air Squadrons. He holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in aeronautical engineering from the California Institute of Technology. Long married to his wife Mary Louise Gates since 1955, Dr. Richmond has two children.
