With more than 35 years of experience to his credit, Dr. McDonald has worked as a chief technologist for QualiTau, Inc., since 2017. Prior to these appointments, he held the positions of instructor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, from 2012 to 2017, vice president of hardware development at Altierre Corporation from 2003 to 2007, director of RF/Analog at Bermai, Inc., from 2001 to 2002, and design engineering manager at Linear Technology Corporation from 1995 to 2001. Previously, he served as the engineering project manager at National Semiconductor from 1992 to 1995, principal engineer at National Semiconductor from 1990 to 1992, technical staff at Avantek from 1987 to 1990, and research assistant at North Carolina State University from 1985 to 1986. Dr. McDonald began his career as a product engineer at Exide Electronics from 1981 to 1984.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. McDonald pursued an education at Duke University, earning a Bachelor of Science in engineering. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Science at North Carolina State University. Dr. McDonald concluded his studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 2017, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. McDonald has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He contributed to the Silicon Valley Wireless Symposium as session chairman from 1993 to 2002, the RF and Microwave Applications Conference as session chairman in 1992, and the Symposium on VLSI Circuit Programs as a committee member from 1995 to 1997. Likewise, he has held the roles of political campaign precinct captain in Fremont, CA, in 1988, political campaign precinct captain in San Jose, CA, in 2008, secretary of the Carmel Woods Neighborhood Association from 2016 to 2018, and president since 2018. Dr. McDonald found success with his written works as well, having contributed many articles to esteemed scientific journals.

In addition to his primary trade, Dr. McDonald remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He maintained involvement with the Cairn Terrier Club of Northern California as assistant chair in 1995, specialty show chair from 1996 to 1997, and on the board of governors from 1996 to 1999. He was also active as the treasurer of the Sacramento Valley Cairn Terrier Club from 2004 to 2006 and was on the board of governors for the Northern California Terrier Association from 2002 to 2005. Dr. McDonald has been a member of the Cairn Terrier Club of America and a senior member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. McDonald has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
