Dr. Shephard received his MD from the University of California, San Francisco and a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of California, Berkeley where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He completed his post graduate training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Jackson Memorial Hospital at the University of Miami and is a board-certified Diplomat of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He currently serves as an affiliate associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the School of Medicine at the University of South Florida, a position he has held since 1976. His varied background includes four decades in a private practice, numerous publications for consumer readership on women's health issues and work as a Regional Physician Informaticist for BayCare Health System from 2013 to 2018.
Dr. Shephard notes that his decision to work in the field of obstetrics and gynecology was influenced by the unique opportunity afforded by a specialty that combined preventive medicine, obstetrics, and surgery. During his medical practice in which he delivered in excess of 7,000 babies, he was involved in other professional activities for which he was recognized. In 2016, he received the Physician of the Year Award from the Hillsborough County Medical Association. Early in his career he was awarded the John McCain Fellowship in Washington in 1981 leading to a lifelong interest in political advocacy as well as consumer education in the area of women's health. In 1992 Dr. Shephard received the Mead Johnson Focus on Patient Education Award as principal author of The Complete Guide to Women's Health (Penguin Press), a work described by the Washington Post as the "best of its genre".
Dr. Shephard has participated in numerous organizations throughout his career. He was a member of the patient education committee for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists from 1984 to 1986, and has held various positions at the Hillsborough County Medical Association, including president from 2006 to 2007, vice president from 2003 to 2005 and as president of the Board of Trustees in 2010 and 2015. Currently he serves as a lecturer on women's health issues for Continuing Education, Inc. and as a consultant to EQ Health Solutions, performing utilization reviews for the State of Florida. Notably, Dr. Shephard was recognized by Marquis Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare in 1997 and from 2002 to 2009. Dr. Shephard is married to Coleen Shephard and is the father of three children, Christopher (Princeton '98), Carleton (Yale '01), and Elizabeth (Carleton College '06).
