Robert Figlin, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Figlin has been the Steven Spielberg Family Chair in Hematology-Oncology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center since 2010, where he focuses his practice and research on the treatment and prevention of kidney cancers and other ailments. Alongside this prominent role, he has also served as the director of the Division of Hematology/Oncology, director of the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Center, and professor of biomedical sciences and medicine since 2010. Prior to these positions, Dr. Figlin held a number of roles with the City of Hope in Duarte, CA, including as acting director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Arthur and Rosalie Kaplan professor of medical oncology, chair of the department of medical oncology and experimental therapeutics research and associate director of clinical research.

Likewise, Dr. Figlin served the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, in myriad positions, such as co-director of the lung research program, co-director of genitourinary oncology, program director of solid tumor oncology, director of the hematology/oncology fellowship program, and director of the Bowyer Oncology Center, among others. He was further employed by the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA as a professor of clinical urology and medicine in the division of hematology-oncology and medical director of the thoracic oncology program in the divisions of hematology-oncology and urology. In addition, Dr. Figlin has been a member of the board of directors of the Lung Cancer Foundation of America and chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Phase One Foundation since 2005.

To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Figlin pursued a formal education at Temple University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1970. He subsequently completed postgraduate coursework at the university in 1972. Soon thereafter, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1976. Dr. Figlin completed his internship and residency at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center between 1976 and 1979, becoming chief resident in medicine from 1979 to 1980.

Dr. Figlin concluded his education in 1982, when he completed a fellowship in hematology-oncology at UCLA. He has been certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Medical Oncology and the National Board of Medical Examiners. Furthermore, Dr. Figlin is licensed to practice medicine in the state of California.

In addition to his work as a physician, Dr. Figlin has been a prolific author, contributing a number of articles and reviews to professional journals and acting as a member of the editorial board of several publications, including Seminars on Oncology-Kidney Cancer, Cancer Therapeutics, Cancer Biotherapy and Radiopharmaceuticals, and the Kidney Cancer Journal, among others. He also maintains affiliation with numerous organizations to remain aware of changes within his industry, such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Urological Association, and the Society for Biological Therapy, where he was president of the cancer panel in 1997. Dr. Figlin has been further recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the International Society for Biological Therapy.

In light of his exceptional accomplishments in the health care industry, Dr. Figlin has accrued several accolades throughout his career. Named one of the Best Doctors in America since 1994, he has also been named one of America's Top Doctors for Cancer since 2006. Additionally, Dr. Figlin won the Patients' Choice Award from Vitals.com in 2015, the International Kidney Cancer Association Research Award in 2013, and the Outstanding Alumni Clinician Award from the Drexel University College of Medicine in 2010.
