With more than 45 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Nicolson is currently retired, having most recently worked as president and chief executive officer for Austin Allen Associates from 2001 to 2012. Prior to this appointment, he held the position of head of the SEE3 International Research Program for CIBA Vision from 1992 to 2001. Previously, he served CIBA Vision as executive director of Materials and Solutions Development from 1982 to 1992. Dr. Nicolson began his career at Geigy Chemical Corporation as manager of Analytical Chemistry from 1965 to 1978 and as associate director of Central Research from 1978 to 1982.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Nicolson pursued an education at West Virginia Wesleyan College, earning a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1960. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Science in organic chemistry at Arizona State University in 1964. He concluded his studies at Arizona State University in 1965, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in physical organic chemistry. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Nicolson holds 14 patents both domestically and internationally. Dr. Nicolson has published articles in biopolymers and contact lens materials technology.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Nicolson has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. A lecturer in his industry, he found success as a consultant for outside counsel in relation to contact lens patent litigation from 1999 to 2010. Dr. Nicolson, a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, has further held the roles of vice president for the Heather Ridge Homeowners Association in 1988, vice president of the Master Home Owner Association of the Brannon Oak Farm Community from 2010 to 2012, and president of the Home Owners Association of the Gallery of Homes in the Brannon Oak Farm Community from 2010 to 2012.

In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Nicolson remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. In 1987, he maintained involvement on the Research Committee of the American Optometric Association and served as Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Contact Lens Institute where he participated in the establishment of drafting CEN/ISO standards relevant to contact lenses 1989 to 1991. Dr. Nicolson was also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Arizona State University Chapter of The Society of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society of America, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and is currently a member of the American Chemical Society.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Nicolson has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was recognized as a fellow of the American Institute of Chemists in 1981, as well as among the Outstanding Young Men in America in 1970. He was presented with Significant Contribution Recognition from the School of Optometry and the Center for Corneal and Contact Lens Research at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1990, an Honor Award from the New Center at University of New South Wales in 2000, and an Industry Award from the British Contact Lens Association in 2017. Dr. Nicolson was selected for inclusion in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
