With 60 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Vanselow has worked as professor emeritus of internal medicine and Tulane Medical Center chancellor emeritus for Tulane University since 1997. Prior to this appointment, he served Tulane University as professor of internal medicine from 1989 to 1997 and Tulane Medical Center chancellor from 1989 to 1994, the University of Minnesota as professor of internal medicine and vice president of health sciences from 1982 to 1989, the University of Nebraska Omaha as vice president and Medical Center chancellor from 1977 to 1982, and the University of Arizona as dean of the College of Medicine from 1974 to 1977. Previously, he held multiple positions at the University of Michigan, including professor from 1972 to 1974, chairman of the Department of Postgraduate Medicine and Health Professions Education from 1972 to 1974, associate professor from 1968 to 1972, assistant professor from 1964 to 1968, and instructor of medicine from 1963 to 1964. Dr. Vanselow began his career as an intern at Minneapolis General Hospital from 1958 to 1959 and resident at the University Hospital for Michigan Medicine from 1959 to 1963.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Vanselow pursued an education at the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1954. He continued his academic efforts with a Doctor of Medicine in 1958, also at the University of Michigan. He concluded his studies at the University of Michigan in 1963, graduating with a Master of Science. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Vanselow became a diplomate of both the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Vanselow has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He has contributed to the Institute of Medicine for the National Academy of Sciences as chairperson of the Committee on Introducing Social and Behavioral Science into Medical School Curriculum from 2002 to 2004, member of the Committee to Assess Occupational Health and Safety Training Needs from 1999 to 2000, co-chairperson of the Committee on U.S. Physician Supply from 1995 to 1996, chairperson of the Committee on Future of Primary Care from 1994 to 1996, and member of the Committee on Educating Dentists for Future from 1993 to 1995. Dr. Vanselow has also been associated with the Rio Verde Board of Fire Commissioners from 2009 to 2015, the Health Science Advisory Committee for the University of Arizona from 2009 to 2011, the Special Emphasis Panel for the National Institutes of Health in 2005, and the Advisory Committee for Medschool.com from 2000 to 2001.
Dr. Vanselow has held the role of chairperson for the Continuing Evaluation Panel for the American International Health Alliance from 2000 to 2001, the Council on Graduate Medical Education from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 1986 to 1991, and the Joint Board of Osteopathic and Medical Examiners for the State of Arizona from 1974 to 1977. He has further excelled as an adjunct professor for the School of Health Administration and Policy at Arizona State University from 2000 to 2005, president and chairman of the board for the American Friends of LSHTM from 1998 to 2002, adjunct professor of Health System Management for Tulane University from 1993 to 1999, and vice president for the Health Planning Council of the Midlands from 1981 to 1982. Additionally, Dr. Vanselow was appointed to the Board of Directors for the University of Arizona Health Sciences from 2010 to 2012, the Committee on Relationships between Medicine and Nursing for the Josiah Macy Junior Foundation from 1999 to 2000, the Panel on Interdisciplinary Health Professional Education for the National League for Nursing from 1996 to 1997, and the Executive Committee for campaigns for the United Way of the Midlands from 1980 to 1982.
Likewise, Dr. Vanselow has been on the Commission on the Future of Medical Education for the University of California from 1996 to 1997, the Marketing Management Governing Council for the University Hospital Consortium from 1993 to 1995, the Governor's Pan American Commission for the State of Louisiana from 1991 to 1992, and the Commission on Health Professions, Pew Charitable Trusts from 1990 to 1992 and 1997 to 1999, for which he also the vice-chairman in 1981. He has held a number of posts at Meharry Medical College, including Emeritus Trustee since 2012, chair of the Presidential Search Committee in 2006, and trustee from 1996 to 2012. On both the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for the Health Planning Council of the Midlands from 1978 to 1982, Dr. Vanselow also found success on the Board of Directors for the United Way of Southeast Louisiana from 1992 to 1997, the Louisiana Health Care Authority from 1989 to 1990, the Minnesota Coalition for Health Care Costs from 1983 to 1987, the Minnesota High Technology Council from 1983 to 1986, and the Development Authority for Tucson's Economy from 1975 to 1977.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Vanselow remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement on the Board of Governors for the Arizona Academy of Science and Technology from 2005 to 2007, the Board of Directors for the Rio Verde Community Association from 2000 to 2004, the Workgroup on Physician Workforce and Financing Medical Education for the American College of Physicians in 1996, and on the Board of Directors for the Association of Academic Health Centers from 1983 to 1989. He has been active as the chairman of the Board of Directors for the Association of Academic Health Centers in 1988, a founding member of the Arizona Academy of Science and Technology and a member of Society of Medical Administrators. Dr. Vanselow was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Nu Sigma Nu, Beta Theta Pi, Alpha Omega Alpha and Sigma Xi.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Vanselow has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the Arizona Academy of Science and Technology, the American Association for Physician Leadership and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. He was further honored as a Scholar-in-Residence at the Institute of Medicine for the National Academy of Sciences from 1994 to 1995. In 2007, he was presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Michigan Medicine Alumni Society. Dr. Vanselow died April 5, 2016. He was survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary McKenzie Vanselow, daughter Julie Fischer, son Richard Vanselow and grandchildren Katherine, Michael and Andrew Fischer and Jules and Abe Vanselow.
