A general surgeon who is affiliated with Taylor Regional Hospital in Campbellsville, KY, Dr. Shively formerly served as chief of staff at the hospital and as president of the medical staff. He has worked for the University of Surgical Associates at the University of Louisville in Campbellsville. He has practiced general surgery in Campbellsville for 41 years. He holds a medical license in the states of Kentucky and Indiana, board certification by the American Board of Surgery, and is a certified advanced trauma life support instructor. A longtime clinical professor of surgery at his alma mater, the University of Louisville, since 1994, he has also been a cancer liaison physician in the cancer liaison program with the commission on cancer at Taylor County Hospital since 2003. Dr. Shively is a clinical faculty member in the school of osteopathic medicine at Pikeville College, clinical adjunct faculty at DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, Lincoln Memorial Hospital, and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Kentucky.

A presenter in his field who has written extensively, Dr. Shively has authored/co-authored dozens of scholarly articles in various professional publications over the past four decades. More recently, he published 'Panel Discussion for Symposium on Safety and Quality Improvement: In Specialty Surgery in Smaller Hospitals' in the "American Journal of Surgery (2012)." He has also been active on a number of boards with professional organizations, including as president of the Louisville Society and president of Kentucky Chapter American College of Surgeons. Dr. Shively has published 18 scientific articles in peer reviewed journals. He is a member of several surgical organizations including the Southern Surgical Association. He was president of the Southern Surgeons Travel Club 2017-18.

Known for participating in multiple medical mission trips, Dr. Shively has traveled to such places as Honduras, Kenya, the Galapagos Island, Haiti and Jamaica, with plans to continue to do so in retirement. He has also spent time on the Commission for Handicapped Children, as an advisor for the Boy Scouts of America and as an elder with Bethel First Presbyterian Church. Notably, between 1971 and 1973, Dr. Shively was a flight surgeon at the U.S. Air Force Hospital at Forbes Air Force Base in Kansas.

Born in Lebanon, Ky., Dr. Shively later attended Campbellsville High School where he was valedictorian of his senior class in 1962. He then received an undergraduate degree with honors in 1966 and Doctor of Medicine at the University of Louisville in 1970, followed by residency work in general surgery. Honored many times for his work, he received a 36-Year Award as a Cancer Liaison Physician, a Compassionate Physician Award at The Doctor's Ball in Louisville and a Samuel Gross Award from the Department of Surgery, among others, and has been showcased in the first edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. Married to his wife Susan Ashley Shaw, Dr. Shively is the proud parent of two children.
