With nearly 70 years of professional experience, Dr. Nyhan has been a professor at the University of California, San Diego, since 1969, also serving as chair of the department of pediatrics from 1969 to 1986. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was a professor and chair of the department of pediatrics at the University of Miami from 1963 to 1969, and an assistant and associate professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University from 1958 to 1963. Earlier in his career, Dr. Nyhan was a resident with Yale-New Haven Hospital from 1950 to 1951 and 1953 to 1955, having held an internship with the institution from 1949 to 1950.
Dr. Nyhan began his career as a student at Harvard University from 1943 to 1945, also serving with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He then joined Columbia University, completing a Doctor of Medicine in 1949. From 1951 to 1953, he served with the United States Army. He subsequently earned a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from the University of Illinois in 1956 and 1958, respectively. Dr. Nyhan also holds an honorary doctorate from Tokushima University in Japan.
A respected voice in his field, Dr. Nyhan has been affiliated with a number of organizations in his community, including as a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Biochemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, and the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. The former director of the American Society of Human Genetics, he has also been active with the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, and the American Institute of Biological Sciences.
Dr. Nyhan is an honorary member of South African Human Genetics, and he is a corresponding member of El Instituto de Investigaciones Citológicas and the Société Française de Pédiatrie. He is affiliated with the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the American Association of Cancer Research, and the American Pediatric Society/Society for Pediatrics Research. The former president of the Western Society for Pediatric Research, Dr. Nyhan is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Federation for Clinical Research, Alpha Omega Alpha and Sigma Chi.
Dr. Nyhan has served on the scientific advisory board of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, the College of American Pathologists, and the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. He has served on the Research Policy Research Committee, and he is a member of the board of governors of the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies. He has lent his expertise to numerous books and articles in professional journals, and he has served on the editorial board for several journals in relation to his areas of expertise. Throughout his career, Dr. Nyhan has been recognized for his contributions, having been recognized as a National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis Fellow. The recipient of the Commemorative Medallion from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, he also received a Guthrie Award from the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and the Pool of Bethesda Award from Bethesda Lutheran Homes and Services.
