Mitsuaki Nishibuchi Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Mitsuaki Nishibuchi was instrumental in the discovery of a pandemic caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

With 35 years of professional experience, Dr. Nishibuchi has been a professor with the Kyoto University Center for Southeast Asian Studies since 1996, having been an associate and assistant professor with the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine since 1988. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was an assistant with the Osaka University Research Institute for Microbial Diseases from 1986 to 1987. Earlier in his career, Dr. Nishibuchi was a postdoctoral research associate with the University of Maryland Center for Vaccine Development from 1983 to 1986.

Dr. Nishibuchi began his career as a student at Hiroshima University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in agriculture in 1976 and completing a Master of Agriculture in 1979. He subsequently traveled to the United States to study at Oregon State University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1983. Dr. Nishibuchi also holds an honorary Doctor of Philosophy from Prince of Songkhla University in Thailand.

A respected voice in the field, Dr. Nishibuchi has been affiliated with numerous organizations, including as a member of the America Society for Microbiology, the Japanese Society for Bacteriology, and the Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases. A member of the Society of the Sigma Xi, he is also active with the New York Academy of Sciences, the Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine, and the Society for Antibacterial and Antifungal Agents. Dr. Nishibuchi has authored 195 articles to professional journals, and 25 reviews and chapters for books.

Dr. Nishibuchi has served on the international advisory committed for the International Conference on Molluscan Shellfish Safety, as well as the chair of the choler and other bacterial enteric infections panel of the United State-Japan Cooperative Medical Science Program. He also excelled as an expert at the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Meeting on Risk assessment Tools for Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus Associated with Seafoods. Dr. Nishibuchi was instrumental in the discovery of a pandemic caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

Dr. Nishibuchi has been recognized for his contributions throughout his career, having received an Award of Excellence from the Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine. He was the recipient of a Gold Prize from the Asia Pacific Publishers Association, and he was presented with a N.L. Tarter Research Award. Dr. Nishibuchi has also received grants from a number of institutions, having received a National Student Research Award from the Sea Grant Association.
