Psychiatrist Nicholas Emanuel Stratas has more than 50 years working with individuals, couples, families, groups and organizations.

Psychiatrist Dr. Stratas has more than 50 years working with individuals, couples, families, groups and organizations using a general systems, experiential, cognitive, behavioral, and spiritual framework and approach to mental wellness.

Using this framework, he played significant roles in North Carolina's public mental health system in the 1960s and 1970s. As Director of Professional Education he developed two psychiatric residency training programs, acquiring the first NIMH grant in community psychiatry in the nation.

As Deputy Commissioner of NC Mental Health he decided the racial integration of the state hospital system toward developing a statewide community mental health program with services in each of the 100 counties and which continues as a national model. During that period, working with the Mainframe in Research Triangle Park, a computer based model for the citizens of 20 counties of NC was developed, the first computer modeled planning addiction services for and used by the locals. He has also been in private practice in clinical psychiatry and as an organization management consultant since 1960. Using that same framework he is providing services and is founder of many programs – in 1978 co-founder & First Medical Director, Holly Hill Hospital, Raleigh, NC, in 1977 co-founder and managing partner in 1982, 1986, 1990, 1995, 1996 of Raleigh Psychiatric Associates, P.A., , in 1980 co-founder and first medical director, Raleigh Stress & Pain Clinic, He was co-founder and medical director of The Community Mental Health Clinic, a free clinic in Raleigh, NC from 1996 to 2015. In 2010, and continuing in the present, Dr. Stratas, with his wife Cynthia D Hazen, PhD co-founded Thriving Unlimited, LLC researching and consulting what it is about some people who thrive, and engaging people in sharing personal experiences and perception of thriving.

In addition to his work in the field, Dr. Stratas has served in academia since 1964, first as assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina Medical School. He is clinical professor since 1984. He is also an associate consulting professor at Duke University Medical Center since 1980. During his career, Dr. Stratas has served as visiting lecturer at other universities, such as Harvard, William & Mary, Vanderbilt and North Carolina State University.
During his career, he has provided organization development consultation services to numerous corporate, legislative and governmental organizations such as IBM, ITT, and the states of Massachusetts and Georgia. He has been a staff member at Wake Medical Center, Rex and Raleigh Community Hospitals for more than 45 years.

An elected life member of the American Medical Association and Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Stratas is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Pain Management, the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine and the Pan American Medical Association. Notably he served as the president of the Board of Medical Examiners of North Carolina from 1992 to 1993, a member holding all offices 1987-1993. Outside his field, he has spent time with such as organizations as the Boy Scouts of America and served on the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Board of Trustees and was a Sunday school coordinator. He has participated with numerous civic and public organizations.

The author of over 100 scholarly articles in various journals and several publications, including in 1981 "The Chronic Patient," and "The Chronic Mentally Ill: A Systems Approach," He has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including 3 from North Carolina governors. Dr. Stratas was named Outstanding Psychiatrist by the National Association of the Mentally Ill in 2012, received the President's Award from the North Carolina Psychiatric Association in 2008 and several citations from the American Psychiatric Association.

Dr. Stratas earned a BA and MD at the University of Toronto, Canada. He did his internship at Memorial Hospital in Danville, VA, and a residency in psychiatry at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, VA, becoming chief resident in psychiatry at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh, NC. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the International Academy of Behavioral Medicine and the Federation State of Medical Boards of the United States.
Born in 1932 and raised in Toronto, Dr. Stratas came to the U.S. in 1957 just after completing his medical degree. He is now married to Cynthia D. Hazen, Ph.D. In a marriage of 54 years to his deceased first wife Irene Printezis they had three children, Nicholas, Byron (now deceased) and Andrew (also deceased).
