Registered as a professional engineer in Texas, Mr. Paulson demonstrates significant career longevity and a longstanding interest in chemical engineering. He earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Michigan State University in 1949 and, demonstrating academic excellence, later earned an honorary doctorate from Texas A&M University in 2014. Most recently chairman of the board for Contech Control Services, Mr. Paulson started out as a process engineer for Mid-West Refineries, Inc., in 1949, and went on to become a plant manager at Kerr-McGee Corporation in 1957 and vice president of Coastal States Petrochemical in 1966. He then fostered involvement with Koch Industries, where he worked in various locations as vice president and consultant before becoming president of Loch Refining Company in Wichita, KS, in 1981. He also worked as chairman for The Automation Group, Inc., and as chairman and chief executive officer for The Inspection Group, Inc.

Mr. Paulson's proficiency in engineering and leadership also extends to Orion Refining Corporation, where he has been on the board of directors since 1999. He has fulfilled additional work with TOR Minerals International, Inc., and has served on their board of directors as chairman. Due to his considerable contributions to his industry, Mr. Paulson was given the Red Cedar Circle Award in the Department of Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University in 2000. He was also the recipient of the Claud R. Erikson Distinguished Alumnus Award from Michigan State University in 1994. Demonstrating skill in military as well as engineering-related pursuits, Mr. Paulson served as a first lieutenant for the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1957.

Interested in a wide range of civic involvement, Mr. Paulson has served his community through association with Port of Corpus Christi Authority as vice chairman and commissioner and work with the Corpus Christi Board of Trade as president. He has also served in leadership positions for organizations such as the Texas Water Development Board, the Cleveland Area Hospital Corporation, the Art Museum of South Texas, the Coastal Bend Community Foundation and the Ada Wilson Hospital Foundation, among others. Interested in remaining aware of industry developments, he maintains membership with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, from whom he received the Fuels and Petrochemicals Award in 1989.
