Dr. Boyer has been a registered (now retired) professional engineer in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Oklahoma and professor emeritus at Texas A&M University. Officially retiring from academia in 1999 after teaching on campus for 14 years, he also chaired the design technology division in the College of Architecture between 1988 and 1990. Formerly teaching Pennsylvania State University and Oklahoma State University, where he also served as the director of the environmental control program, Dr. Boyer also spent one year abroad at Kuwait University as chair of the department of architecture and visiting professor during the 1997 academic school year. In the field, Dr. Boyer was a senior consultant of acoustics and noise control for Bolt Beranek and Newman, Inc., in Cambridge, MA, course director for the National Society of Professional Engineers and research engineer at Armstrong Cork Company in Lancaster, PA.
Outside the classroom, he went to Australia for 11 months in 1982 and organized the very first International Conference on Earth Sheltered Buildings, being supported by his funded Traveling Fulbright Proposal. With his host Dr. Sydney Baggs at the University of New South Wales, they conducted this first conference in 1983 in Sydney. Because of his travels there, he then led a 1-week tour of the outback region after the conference. This was the first of six (6) conferences worldwide in which he also participated: 1983 Sydney, 1986 Minneapolis, 1988 Shanghai, 1990 London, 1992 Holland, and 1995 Paris. Dr. Boyer is the lead author of the hardback book Earth Shelter Technology in 1987 by Texas A&M University Press for which he received royalties for the next 30 years. Dr. Boyer chaired the energy research review panel for the Office of Energy Research with the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, DC, was a technology chairman for the International Conference on Earth Sheltered Buildings in Minneapolis, MN, and director of daylight research for the National Science Foundation, among other roles. He also authored numerous articles in scholarly journals and was an editor for several publications, including "Design in Geotecture," "Earth Shelter Protection," "Building Design for Environmental Hazards" and "Underground Space and Earth Sheltered Structures" which was developed in Holland in 1992.
A longtime member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, the American Solar Energy Society and the Illuminating Engineering Society, Dr. Boyer formerly served on the board of directors for the American Underground Space Association and as a national coordinator for the passive earth cooling program with the American Solar Energy Society. The recipient of a Graduate Teaching Award from Texas A&M University in 1994, First Place Design Award from the National Energy Design Competition in 1983, and Advisor of the Year Award from the Lancaster County Boy Scout Council in 1967, he has been cited in approximately 30 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Notably, Dr. Boyer holds a Bachelor of Science in architectural engineering from Pennsylvania State University, a Master of Science in architectural engineering from Pennsylvania State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley.
