Dr. Mayerson, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Science Center in Denver, CO, between 1996 and 2015, recently retired after over 50 years in practice. Upon earning his undergraduate degree at Brown University cum laude in 1955, where he was elected to the Sigma Xi Society, and serving three years in the U.S. Navy as an Ensign and Lieutenant Junior Grade between 1955 and 1958, he entered medical school, graduating with an MD from Tulane University in 1962. Interning at the University of California Medical and completing his residency work in psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati General Hospital, Dr. Mayerson began his career as an instructor and assistant director and then director of the emergency psychiatric service at the University of Colorado Health Science Center. Although moving into private practice, he has maintained his position as Professor of Psychiatry at the UCHSC.

During Dr. Mayerson's tenure in higher education, he also maintained his own successful private practice in Denver between 1970 and 1999, was a supervisor and consultant for Mental Health Professionals between 1996 and 2015 and also did forensic consulting work between 2001 and 2014. A longtime training and supervising analyst with the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysts since 1985, Dr. Mayerson has also served as a faculty member of the Osher Long Learning Institute in Denver since 2012. Dr. Mayerson is certified in psychoanalysis through the Denver Institute of Psychoanalysis and board certified in psychiatry and psychoanalysis.

Dr. Mayerson served as a Board Member of Colorado Compassion & Choice from 1999 to 2017, and served a two year term as President. He was instrumental in having a Physician Aid in Dying Bill passed in Colorado in 2016. He is also a tenured teacher for the continued education program at The Denver Psychoanalytic Society, where he has served on various committees and in varied positions since he joined in 1975.

An elected fellow and life member of the American Psychiatric Association, fellow of the Colorado Psychiatric Society and member of the American Psychoanalytic Association, Dr. Mayerson has been the recipient of a Jay Scully Teaching Excellence Award and a Medical Staff Distinguished Service Award from Bethesda PsycHealth Hospital. Outside of work, Dr. Mayerson enjoys spending his free time with his wife, Lois, and his two adult children. He is also a member of the Colorado Skimeisters and enjoys skiing, hiking and biking with this active organization. He has been a member of a number of community and national action groups. As a testament to his success, Dr. Mayerson has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the West.
