Henry W. Lim, MD was drawn to the field of dermatology because it merged his passion for science, people and investigative research.

Since 2004, Dr. Lim has been an associate dean at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI. He is also currently employed by the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI, where he has been the senior vice president of academy affairs since 2008 and the chair emeritus for the department of dermatology since 2017. Prior to these positions, he served as the chairman and Clarence S. Livingood chair of dermatology from 1997 to 2017, vice president of academy affairs from 2003 to 2008, and director of academy programs from 2002 to 2003.

Prior to taking his post at Henry Ford Hospital, Dr. Lim was employed by the New York University School of Medicine in New York City. He was the assistant dean of veterans affairs and professor of dermatology from 1993 to 1997, went from instructor to associate professor of dermatology between 1979 and 1993, was the Dermatology Foundation Fellow from 1979 to 1980, was the National Institutes of Health Fellow in 1979, and was a resident in the dermatology department from 1975 to 1976. His first professional position was as an intern at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine from 1975 to 1976.

In addition to these roles, Dr. Lim has been a professor of pathology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine since 2003. He also has been an instrumental member of the team at New York Veterans Affairs Medical Center in New York City over the years, having been a staff physician of dermatology service from 1994 to 1997 chief of dermatology service from 1985 to 1994, and chief of staff from 1993 to 1997.

Dr. Lim began his academic pursuits at McGill University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry, with honors, in 1971. He continued his studies at the SUNY Downstate Medical School in Brooklyn, NY, where he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, in 1975. Beyond these degrees, he is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and is certified by the American Board of Dermatology. He was drawn to the field of dermatology because it merged his passion for science, people and investigative research.

As a respected figure in the field, Dr. Lim has been involved with many creative works. He was an editor of Photodermatology, Photoimmunology & Photomedicine from 2000 to 2003 and was an associate editor of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology from 2003 to 2009. In addition, he was a member of the editorial board at the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology from 1993 to 2008, at JAMA Dermatology from 2009 to 2015, and at Photodermatology, Photoimmunology & Photomedicine since 2010.

Dr. Lim's involvement in academia has been extensive over the years, maintaining membership with the American Medical Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Skin of Color Society. He has also been the president and director of the American Board of Dermatology, vice president and president of the International Union of Photobiology, president of The Photomedicine Society, president of the American Dermatological Association, and the councilor, president and chair of the scientific program committee of the American Society for Photobiology.

Furthermore, Dr. Lim is a member of the Society for Investigative Dermatology, the Association of Professors of Dermatology, the American Dermatological Association, and the Dermatological Foundation. Other memberships include the American Academy of Dermatology and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Additionally, he is on the board of directors for the South East Michigan Community Foundation.

Throughout the years, Dr. Lim has been recognized on numerous occasions for his contributions to the field. From 1968 to 1970, he was named a scholar by McGill University, and in 2016, he was awarded by the Henry Ford Medical Group the Fred W. Whitehouse Distinguished Career Award. He has been awarded multiple presidential citations from the American Academy of Dermatology. Though these are impressive accomplishments, Dr. Lim considers the highlight of his career to be how he helped trainees to achieve their professional pursuits.
