Dr. Lanza is a medical scientist who is currently serving as the chief scientific officer at the Astellas Institute for Regenerative Medicine in Marlborough, Mass., as well as the head of global regenerative medicine for Astellas Pharma in Tokyo, Japan since 2016. He is also an adjunct professor at Wake Forest University. Playing a major role in the scientific revolution that has led to the documentation that nuclear transfer and reprogramming factors can restore developmental potential in a differentiated cell, Dr. Lanza's research focuses on stem cells and regenerative medicine, specifically in their potential to provide therapies for some of the world's most deadly and debilitating conditions.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Lanza pursued an education at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1978. He concluded his studies at the University of Pennsylvania in 1983, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine. During his time in academia, Dr. Lanza was recognized as a Scholar of the University of Pennsylvania from 1976 to 1983, a Fulbright Scholar from 1978 to 1979, a Benjamin Franklin Scholar from 1975 to 1978, and a Professor Howe Buck Scholar from 1974 to 1975.

Formerly the chief scientific officer for Advanced Cell Technology, Inc., Dr. Lanza's career history additionally includes working for Biohybrid Technologies and UCLA. From 1994 to 1995, he accrued experience as a clinical associate professor of surgery at Tufts University. Likewise, Dr. Lanza was an associate in surgery at Harvard Medical School for Harvard University from 1991 to 1993.

Being named among TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2014, Dr. Lanza is renowned for cloning the first endangered species and participating on the team that cloned the first human embryo for medical purposes. He has also been responsible for reversing aging through nuclear transfer, demonstrating "proof-of-principle" for therapeutic cloning and successfully generating stem cells from adults using somatic-cell nuclear transfer. Holding multiple patents in his field, Dr. Lanza has also published the first reports of pluripotent stem cells transplanted into humans.

Writing extensively in his field, Dr. Lanza is the author of over 30 scientific books, including "Biocentrism: How Life and Consciousness are the Keys to Understanding the True Nature of the Universe," "Principles of Tissue Engineering" and "Essentials of Stem Cell Biology," he is also the associate editor for Regenerative Medicine and editor-in-chief of BioResearch Open Access. Furthermore, Dr. Lanza has been featured on CNN, in nearly every top magazine from around the world, including TIME, Fortune, Newsweek, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and in 2007, he was interviewed by Barbara Walters.

In addition to being recognized among the Top 50 World Thinkers by Prospect Magazine in 2015, Dr. Lanza received a 2013 Il Leone di San Marco Award in Medicine from the Italian Heritage and Culture Committee, a 2010 Director's Award for Translating Basic Science Discoveries into New and Better Treatments from the National Institutes of Health, a Outstanding Contribution in Contemporary Biology Award in 2007, an All-Star Award for Biotechnology in 2006, a Rave Award in Medicine from WIRED in 2005, and the William O' Taylor Award from the Boston Globe. He also was honored among the Top 4 Most Influential People on Stem Cells by Terrapinn in 2013, among the Top 50 Global Stem Cell Influencers in 2013, as a Mover and Shaker Who Will Shape Biotech Over the Next 20 Years by BioWorld in 2010, and among the 100 Most Inspiring People in the Life-Sciences Industry by PharmaVOICE in 2007.
