Binder with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Binder celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in Ophthalmology. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Binder has volunteered as a non-salaried Clinical Prof. of Ophthalmology for the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at the University of California, Irvine, California for the past decade. One of his career achievements has been his establishment of one of three privately funded Ophthalmology Research Laboratories in the United States (National Vision Research Institute) outside of Academic Ophthalmology. Immediately thereafter, he joined the full-time medical faculty for the newly established Division of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Diego, where he served for the following seven years first as an Assistant Professor and later as an Associate Professor.

He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Microbiology from the University of Illinois between 1960 and 1965. Following four years of medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago, Dr. Binder completed a one-year rotating internship at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was honored to be accepted for a three-year residency position at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and this was followed by his one-year corneal fellowship in Gainesville, Florida. During his years in his practice of Ophthalmology, he received numerous certifications for newly developed ophthalmic technologies and procedures in the field of corneal surgery and refractive eye surgery. His basic science research in the laboratory particularly in the field of experimental pathology led to over 300 scientific publications in peer-reviewed Ophthalmology journals and invitations to speak and perform surgery nationally and internationally in over 30 countries. As an example, he performed the first radial keratotomy procedures (RK) in France and in Japan and was the first to use the femtosecond IntralaseTM laser clinically for corneal surgery in Europe. He has served as a reviewer or editorial Board member for almost all of the existing Ophthalmology journals and according to the company Publons, he was ranked in the 89th percentile of Ophthalmology reviewers in 2018. He has received numerous recognitions for "Exceptionally Good Reviews" from three Journals. His fields of interest within Ophthalmology have included: refractive corneal surgery, electron microscopy (EM, TEM), infectious ophthalmic diseases, contact lens therapy, specular microscopy, ophthalmic immunology, organ and tissue culture, and experimental pathology.

In 1981 he entered the private practice of Ophthalmology at Eye Care of La Jolla; in 1993 he joined his first corneal fellow to form the Gordon Binder Vision Research Institute (later acquiring one of his Ophthalmology Residents to form The Gordon Binder Weiss Vision Institute). In 2008, he retired from clinical practice and entered his third field of interest the first being full-time academic Ophthalmology, the second Private Practice, and subsequently Corporate Ophthalmology and full-time ophthalmic consultation. During his 45 years in Ophthalmology, Dr. Binder was honored to serve as a consultant and/or Medical Director or Monitor at one time or another for all major Ophthalmology companies worldwide.

Throughout his career, Dr. Binder has received numerous honors, accolades and recognitions including several named Ophthalmology lectureships. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS). He served as the Ophthalmology Consultant for the San Diego Zoo for three years.

One of Dr. Binder's major interests within Ophthalmology has been the development and utilization of a major ophthalmology database designed to analyze any medical or surgical procedure that modifies vision and refractive errors. His company, Outcomes Analysis Inc., was sold to a private company in 2013. In order to develop this product, he obtained certification for database structure and function; to improve his skills as a lecturer he obtained several certifications in Microsoft PowerPoint.TM He has published 13 coffee-table books including Aegean Cornea 1992-2016 which represented his time as a co-director of the biannual meeting of the same name.
