He established the first joint venture law firm in Egypt and has practiced throughout the Middle East, as well as Europe and Asia. Ackerson began his distinguished legal career nearly 50 years ago and has represented clients in more than 20 countries. In 1991 he founded the Ackerson Group, now Ackerson Kauffman Fex, a nationally recognized law firm based in Washington, DC with offices in several states.

Prior to forming his own firm, Ackerson was an associate attorney with Barnes Thornburg, now Barnes Hickam Pantzer & Boyd in Indianapolis, Indiana (1971-1976); Chief Counsel to the Subcommittee on the Constitution, United States Senate (1976-1979); Partner with Campbell Kyle Proffitt LLP in Noblesville, Indiana (1979-1982); Managing Director for Sidley Austin & Naguib in Cairo, Egypt (1982-1984); and Partner with Sidley Austin in Washington, DC (1982-1991).

Mr. Ackerson's area of practice includes: complex trial and appellate litigation; government relations; international law; agricultural law; property rights; and eminent domain. He is admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia, Indiana, and the US Court of Federal Claims. He is also admitted to the bar in the US Court of Appeals District of Columbia Circuit; the US Court of Appeals, 4th Circuit which in includes the states of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina; the 6th Circuit which includes portions of Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio; and the 7th Circuit which includes portions of Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. Additionally, he is admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court.

Ackerson received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Harvard University Law School. He was editor of the Harvard Law Review and graduated cum laude in 1971. Through the years he has maintained affiliations with numerous professional associations and societies including:

Nels J Ackerson was raised on a dairy farm in Westfield, Indiana. Before attending Harvard where he also earned a master's degree in public policy, he attended Purdue University and earned a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics. At Purdue he became the national president of Future Farmers of America (FFA) and was a member of FarmHouse Fraternity.

Ackerson has a clear understanding of the challenges that farmers face on a regular basis. He is committed to supporting them and has represented farmers and ranchers in property rights class action cases, eminent domain cases and cases against the government. He has also testified before congress and state legislatures, and has fought for the passage of federal and state legislations that protect the rights of property owners.

Nels J Ackerson was born in Eagletown, Indiana on April 12, 1944. He currently resides in Longboat Key, Florida and enjoys spending time with his family and attending church. He also enjoys the family farm in Westfield, Indiana, writing fiction, and constitutional and international history.
