Gladys Styles Johnston, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

One of Gladys Styles Johnston's greatest achievements was organizing the visit of President Bill Clinton to the University of Nebraska at Kearney while she was chancellor.

Dr. Johnston began her career as a teacher in the Chester Upland School District in Pennsylvania from 1963 to 1966. After this opportunity, she worked as a teacher in the West Chester Area School District in Pennsylvania from 1966 to 1967. She maintained involvement with the West Chester Area School District as director of the Chester County Board of Education from 1967 to 1969 and as assistant principal, elementary principal and director of the summer school for the West Chester Area School District from 1968 to 1971. From 1971 to 1974, she served as a teaching and research assistant at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Dr. Johnston was active as assistant professor of education administration and supervision at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in New Brunswick from 1974 to 1979.

Dr. Johnston progressed to associate professor and chair of the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, from 1979 to 1983. She was further associated with Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, as chair of the department of management at the Business School from 1983 to 1985. From 1985 to 1991, she held the positions of dean and professor of college education at Arizona State University in Tempe. From 1991 to 1993, she contributed to DePaul University in Chicago, IL, as provost and vice president of academic affairs. She also served as a chancellor of DePaul University in 1993. Dr. Johnston concluded her career as chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Prior to embarking on her career, Dr. Johnston received a Bachelor of Science in social sciences from the Cheyney University of Pennsylvania in 1963. Following this accomplishment, she earned a Master of Education in educational administration from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, in 1969. Dr. Johnston concluded her career with a Doctor of Philosophy in educational administration from Cornell University in Ithaca in 1974.

In addition to her career, Dr. Johnston was a distinguished commonwealth visiting professor at the William & Mary School of Education in Williamsburg, VA, from 1982 to 1983. She held the role of manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Higher Education and Educational Leadership with Prentice Hall in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, and consultant to AT&T, the Educational Testing Service and Prentice Hall. Additionally, she was a consultant to the coordinating board of the Texas State University System. From 1979 to 1986, she sat on the board of directors for the Education Law Center, the Arizona PBS station in Phoenix from 1987 to 2018, and the Foundation for Senior Living from 1990 to 1991. Dr. Johnston also was a member of the advisory council to the board of trustees for Cornell University from 1981 to 1986 and trustee of Middlesex General University Hospital in New Brunswick from 1983 to 1986.

Dr. Johnston was the author of "Research and Thought in Administrative Theory" in 1986. She also worked on the editorial boards for Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, the Education Administration Quarterly, and the Journal of Educational and Psychological Research and regularly contributed articles and book reviews to professional journals and chapters to books. She was a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the National Conference of Professors of Educational Administration, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Delta Kappa International, and Alpha Phi Sigma. Dr. Johnston also belonged to the American Educational Research Association, where she was appointed to such roles as proposal reviewer in 1979, chair of the task force for participation and membership in 1981, chair of the E. F. Lindquist award committee in 1985, and member of the government relations committee and the publication committee in 1986.

Dr. Johnston was the recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award from Temple University and was an Andrew D. White Fellow at Cornell University. One of her greatest achievements was organizing the visit of President Bill Clinton to the University of Nebraska at Kearney while she was chancellor. Dr. Johnston has previously been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who of American Women.
