Irwin Weil was awarded the Pushkin International Gold Medal in 1984. In 1987, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Northwestern University Alumni Association.

Dr. Weil began his career as a senior social science research analyst at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, from 1951 to 1954. He was active as a teaching fellow at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, from 1956 to 1958 and a faculty member at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA, from 1958 to 1965. Since 1966, he has been a faculty member of the department of Slavic languages and literature at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, and during this time, he held the position of department chair from 1976 to 1982. Dr. Weil has been a professor emeritus of Northwestern University since 2017.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Weil received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Chicago in Illinois in 1948. Following this achievement, he earned a Master of Arts from the University of Chicago in 1951. He concluded his education with a Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University in 1960. He has also been recipient of honorary doctorates from the Nevsky Institute of Language and Culture in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1999 and the Russian State University for the Humanities in Moscow in 2007.
In addition to his career, Dr. Weil was a visiting professor at the Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia and set up a series of international symposia with the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, now the Russian Academy of Sciences, and founded the first Russian-American student television competition in literature from 1988 to 1989. He was also active in the establishment of the American Studies Center at the Russian State University for the Humanities. His compilation of 36 lectures recordings "Classics of Russian Literature" was published in 2006 and his memoir, "From the Cincinnati Reds to the Moscow Reds," was published in 2017. Dr. Weil is a regular contributor of articles to professional journals and has published a number of books in his field as well.
Dr. Weil is a founding member of the International Association of Teachers of Russian Language. He is a member of the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages, where he served as executive secretary from 1962 to 1968. He also belongs to the American Council of Teachers of Russian and acted as vice president from 1975 to 1979 and president from 1980 to 1984. Dr. Weil was also elected to be a Ford Foundation Fellow from 1954 to 1955.
