Dr. Bynum is a distinguished CSU Professor of Philosophy and Computer Ethics at Southern Connecticut State University. Considered one of the pioneers of the field of computer and information ethics, he began developing the subject in the late 1970s alongside a handful of other professionals. In 1991, Dr. Bynum was co-director of The National Conference on Computing and Human Values funded by the National Science Foundation. From 1995 to 2013, he was co-director of a dozen ETHICOMP international conferences in Europe and Asia. The field of information and computer ethics has now become so popular that it is a booming subject with numerous articles in well-known publications such as the New York Times, Time Magazine, and many others.

Teaching on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University since 1987, Dr. Bynum was first hired as an associate professor of philosophy and became a full professor in 1989. In 2016, he was recognized as a distinguished CSU Professor. In his early academic career, he also taught philosophy at American University, the State University of New York at Albany, Ramapo College of New Jersey, and Dutchess Community College of the SUNY System.

Active in conducting workshops, giving speeches and addresses, producing and hosting video programs and publishing many articles on computing and human values, Dr. Bynum also served on various committees of national and international professional organizations. Notably, in 1978 to 1982 he was the founder and first Executive Director of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers. Most recently, he served as co-director of the Research Center on Values in Emerging Science and Technology at Southern Connecticut State University from 2016 to 2017.

In addition to authoring peer-reviewed articles, he has authored and edited books, monographs and reviews in logic, psychology, history of philosophy, artificial intelligence and education. He was the founder in 1968, and editor-in-chief of "Metaphilosophy" for 25 years, an international scholarly journal published by Basil Blackwell of Oxford, England. He also edited the volumes "Computers and Ethics" and co-edited "Computer Ethics and Professional Responsibility", "The Digital Phoenix: How Computers are Changing Philosophy", and "Cyber Philosophy". His book on the influential philosopher of mathematics Gottlob Frege became an Oxford University Scholarly Classic in 2001.

Recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, an Andrew Mellow Fellowship, a Danforth Fellowship, a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, and a Dartmouth Summer Research Fellowship, Dr. Bynum is a longtime member of the Association for Computing Machinery, the American Philosophical Association, the International Association for Computing and Philosophy, the International Society for Ethics and Information Technology, and a lifetime member of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers. Awarded a Barwise Prize by the American Philosophical Association in 2008, the Weizenbaum Award by the International Society for Ethics and Information Technology in 2008, and a Covey Award from the International Association for Computing and Philosophy in 2011, he has received several grants as well and has been cited in nearly 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Bynum received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and Bachelor of Arts in philosophy, both with honors and distinction, at the University of Delaware in 1963, followed by a Master of Arts in philosophy of science at Princeton University in 1966, Master of Philosophy at City University of New York in 1984, and Doctor of Philosophy at City University of New York in 1986. Married to his wife Aline W. Bynum since 1965 with two sons and one granddaughter, Dr. Bynum credits his wife for much of his success. Notably, Aline is a published author of short stories.
