Dr. Kinloch began his career as a lecturer of sociology at the University of Natal in 1968. He maintained involvement with the University of Natal from 1969 to 1970 as a senior lecturer. After this opportunity, he worked as an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Hawai'i in Honolulu from 1970 to 1971 and as an associate professor at Florida State University in Tallahassee from 1971 to 1975. He continued his career at Florida State University as a professor from 1975 until his retirement in 2016. During this time, Dr. Kinloch held the role of associate dean of academic affairs in the College of Social Sciences at Florida State University from 1992 to 2016.

Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Kinloch received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1963. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Master of Science from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, in 1966. Dr. Kinloch concluded his education with a Doctor of Philosophy from Purdue University in 1968. Professor Robert Perrucci was his mentor and major professor during his years at Purdue.

In addition to his career, Dr. Kinloch is a regular contributor of articles and reviews to professional journals. He has also served as a co-editor of a number of special journal issues. He is the author of a number of books, including "Flame or Lily?" in 1970, "The Dynamics of Race Relations" in 1974, "Sociological Theory" in 1977 (translated into Turkish 2014), "Racial Conflict in Rhodesia" in 1978, "The Sociology of Minority Group Relations" in 1979, and "Ideology and Contemporary Sociological Theory" in 1981. He has also authored "Race and Ethnic Relations: An Annotated Bibliography" in 1984, "Society as Power: An Introduction to Sociology" in 1988, and "The Comparative Understanding of Intergroup Relations" in 1999. Dr. Kinloch is the co-author of "African American Golfers during the Jim Crow Era," published in 2000, and co-editor of "Ideology and the Social Sciences" in 2000 and "Genocide: Approaches, Case Studies and Responses" in 2005.

Dr. Kinloch was a grantee of the University of Natal Research Committee from 1968 to 1969 and the University of Hawai'i Research Council from 1970 to 1971. He was also a grantee of the American Philosophical Society from 1972 to 1974 and recipient of the Best Teacher Award from the department of sociology at Florida State University in 1983. Dr. Kinloch has previously been selected for inclusion in the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders of America and the 20th and 21st editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
