An accomplished business executive with years of expertise, Dr. Smith excels as the president of American Hyperform, Inc., through which he consults with various companies, including North America's largest lithium battery recycling companies, regarding fluoride chemistry lithium batteries, lithium chemicals, and recycling, carbon fibers, and more. Leveraging his considerable management experience, he has led technical and commercial successes and led technical writing for two Department of Energy Proposal Awards. Before obtaining his current role, he worked as the vice president of technology for the Lithchem Energy Division at Retriev Technologies, Inc. In this capacity, Dr. Smith wrote and won more than 14 SBIR Phase I, II, and II programs, was awarded more than 20 patents, and established a process for producing a pure nickel hydroxide from radioactive nickel metal scrap.
During the early stages of his career, Dr. Smith gained valuable expertise in the field as president of RK Carbon Fibers, Inc., vice president of technology for Sunrez Corp., and new materials market development manager for GE. Due to his vast breadth of knowledge, he has contributed to several technical articles and four technical books. In addition to authoring "Hydrogen: Production and Marketing. Proceedings of the Symposium, Honolulu, Hawaii, April 2-6, 1979," Dr. Smith wrote, "Preparation of Alkynes and Dialkynes by Reaction of Monohalo- and Dihaloalkanes with Lithium Acetylenide-Ethylenediamine Complex" and obtained more than 120 patents.
An expert in his field, Dr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in organic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in the same discipline at the University of California, Berkeley. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Smith aligns himself with the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the American Ceramic Society.

More than 20 years ago, he tackled the issue of reusing 70 million pounds of lithium hydroxide. He created a recycling method for the depleted lithium hydroxide to be repurposed as automotive greases, which rely heavily on lithium hydroxide. Within the coming years, Dr. Smith intends to continue working, traveling, and enjoying concerts and opera.
